Although the representation of research process are linear, in reality it is a cyclical and iterative process. (Wilson, 2013)

I have learnt that the research process may take the form of a six stage process (Frankfort-Nachmias and Nachmias, 2008; Zikmund, Babin, Carr, & Griffin, 2009), which are as follows: Problem defining, Research design, Meaurement, Data collection, Data analysis and results and findings. However, not every research project follows the same sequence of steps. It is also noted in Unit 2 that defining the problem does not mean that there is a problem, but it may also speak to an opportunity for the business.

Session 2.3 highlighted ‘The Literature Review’. This is a review of the literature of research conducted by other researches which would allow the researcher to examine the body of knowledge so that the topic can be put into context.

Unit 4 has given me a clearer picture as to how I should go about choosing an appropriate research method. I have also gained a clearer understanding of the qualitative and quantitative method and the circumstances under which they can be used. The unit also outlined the possibility of mixing both methods into the research.
Johnson and Christensen (2010) postulates that research can be fully qualitative or mixed with an emphasis on quantitative of mixed with an emphasis on qualitative and quantitative. (p.32)

Before reading Unit 4, I was overwhelmed as to how I would go about determining how to choose the most suitable sampling frame and how and how I would determine the variables. According to (Frankfort-Nachmias & Nachmias, 2008, Pg 49), a variable refers to the properties or attributes that can be clearly identified and measured in some way. For example, height and weight are considered variables.

Reference

University of the West Indies (n.d) Unit 4: Research Design. Retrieved from
http://2017.tle.courses.open.uwi.edu/pluginfile.php/23583/mod_resource/content/2/MGMT2063_u4-20150914.pdf

Before reading Unit 5 I was very much uncertain as to what was primary data and what was secondary data. The section on types of data was very helpful in assisting me to get a clearer picture. For example, I had never thought of the fact that when a simple survey is done on customer preference that this was actually collecting primary data. This unit has been very instrumental in helping me select the proper medium to collect the needed data for my research paper.
In Unit 5: Determining the value of Data, Zimund et al (2009) postulates that the value of Data can be determined based on the following four criteria: Quality, relevance, timeliness and completeness. The unit also highlights that data collection is a very critical point in a research project, hence, it is very important that the method chosen is appropriate. The Unit also brings out that field workers should be trained to ensure uniformity and consistency in data collection.

Reference

Unit 5: Session 5.1, Sources of Data, Session 5.2, Data Collection Process Retieved from
http://2017.tle.courses.open.uwi.edu/pluginfile.php/23589/mod_resource/content/2/MGMT2063_u5-20150925.pdf

This unit has highlighted the importance of using the correct media of communication in designing a questionnaire, since this impacts how the respondents interpret and answer the questions.
Going through Unit 6 would have changed the way in which I look at a questionnaire. It was oblivious to me previously as to the amount of time and energy that is sacrificed into designing a questionnaire. Before going through this unit, I looked at a questionnaire as a simple sheet of paper with a set of questions. According to Bowling (2005), a minor change in the wording of a question or the order of the question can cause differences in the type of response. As stated in unit 6, under sessions 6.2, 'Importance of Questionnaire Design', it is of importance that one constructs a questionnaire in such a way that it allows data collection to be both relevant and accurate.

References:
Bowling, A.
