I first attended college over forty years ago and reading these laws and ethical standards today does not really connect to my educational experience. There were many activities and events promoted by the college I attended that in today's legal climate would not be allowed by a college. There were not liability waivers signed by students when we went on trips, field trips, and club activities outside of campus. I feel like I was able to experience more of the world around my college through college activities than students are allowed today due to the constant consideration of risk to the university. Even in the last 12 years of me working at a community college, I have seen the types of activities available to staff and students decreased due to "potential risks and liability." Just yesterday an instructor and I were evaluating a student project and competition that we do through her Intro to Computing class and my computer science lab. We had a student cut themselves while working on their project and started considering all of the risks of injury and whether we needed to consult with the legal and risk management departments about a liability waiver for students. It seems that legal standards are top priority for educators and colleges because everyone is afraid of being sued. I include myself in that "everyone."
