Do you love reading different versions of stories? Goldy Luck and the Three Pandasis similar to the familiar Goldilocks and the Three Bears, but in this story Goldy Luck knows the three pandas! In this version, she does eat all the just-right congee (rice porridge), break the just-right chair and fall asleep in a just-right bed. However, I really liked this book because Goldy Luck returns to help clean up her mess, just in time for the Chinese New Year!
Type of traditional literature: folktale
Origin: Chinese American
Read more here!
Reviewed by: Ms. Amon

Are you hungry right now? I am, and so are the Nigerians. If you want to know how the Nigerians get their food, I recommend reading Why The Sky Is Far Away by Mary-Joan Gerson. This book is about how the Nigerians get their food and why the sky is so high in the sky. The thing I liked about this book was its creativeness for having the Nigerians eat the sky. The thing that made this story unusual is that the sky tasted like anything they thought about. I feel like third grade and up would enjoy reading this book.
Type of traditional literature:
folktale
Orgin:Nigeria
Read more here!
Reviewed by: Bianca

Pedro and The Coyote, by Sandy Sepehri

Do you love farming and taking care of all the animals? Or doing something to get people back for what they did? When a coyote starts eating all the chickens Pedro loves, in the book Pedro and The Coyote, he has to get him back for what he did. One night Pedro stays at the pond and waits for the coyote, but the coyote doesn’t know what’s ahead of him.You can figure out what is the plan and what he does in this book by Sandy Sepehri. Pedro loves working, he is a very hard worker. Every morning he feeds the animals but the animals that he most likes are the chickens. He even named them, too. Pedro’s mom told him to stay away from coyotes. But one night a coyote comes and eats 3 chickens. Pedro comes out with a clever plan for the coyote. What I loved about the book is that it tells a lesson: not to be greedy and always treat others like you want to be treated. The unusual thing is that they used a coyote and a little kid. I would recommend this book to 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade.

Type of traditional literature:
folktale
Origin: Mexican
Read more here!
Reviewed by: Mia

This book is perfect for 5th graders and other grades too.
I like this book because I like how the fox got what he needed from all those animals that were in a problem and the fox did not help them with their problems so those animals got their revenge on the fox and the fox left the house all sad and the other animals were laughing and going crazy from their revenge.

Type of Traditional literature: fable
Read More Here!
From:Noah

Have you ever had to leave because she wanted you dead? Well, Snow White has in the book Snow White by Roberto Piumini.

Snow White 's mom was jealous of Snow White's beauty. So her mom decided to get rid of her so that way she could be the prettiest of them all. So she grabbed a huntsman and told him to kill Snow White in the forest. But she was so nice and pretty that he let her go. Snow White had come across a little cottage. Seven Dwarfs welcomed her in and she cleans and cooks for them when they go to work. The stepmom finds out where Snow White lives then she creates a poisoned apple to give to Snow White. She disguises herself as an old lady giving away apples. Snow White takes a bite of the apple and falls straight asleep. Then the dwarfs create a casket for and they put it on top of the hill. One day a prince comes by the casket and has it taken to his palace. On the ride there, the casket falls off the carriage it was on! Then Snow White wakes up because there was just a piece of apple stuck in her throat. The Prince asks her to marry him. The stepmom was found and thrown into jail. Well, if you are, you are educated because a woman told his husband it snowed tortillas and he believed it so it supposedly snowed tortillas! A man found gold and went blabbing and his wife sent him to school! You could read about this in a book called The Day It Snowed Tortillas.
The book is about a man that didn't know anything simple and his wife sent him to school then robbers come for gold and her husband said it snowed tortillas. The robbers saw he was crazy and left the man and his wife alone.

The book was great but also weird because a man's wife had 100 pounds of flour and she made tortillas out of all the flour. Then after that she threw the tortillas outside and when her husband woke up she said “You missed it last night it was snowing tortillas!” The man got confused. I think that 2nd grade to 5th grade would like this story.
Type of traditional literature: folktale
Origin: Mexico
Read more here

The boy needs to be better at not loosing things, and the mouse has to learn that when there is no more space, there is no space.

This book is mostly about a boy who lost his mitten, but when he left it there a mouse got in, then a frog, owl, rabbit, fox, gray wolf, boar, bear, and lastly a cricket. In the end the mitten broke, and I will not give the last bit of all the ending, you need to read for yourself.

I liked it because of all the animals that were there and the tiny mitten and the unusual thing is that nine animals fit in that mitten, even a bear. I think that if the man had been killed by the big pirate the pirates would not have made the fisherman’s wife forget about him. I liked it because it sounded like it was a story they told at sea.

Do you like reading about people doing things that make them seem like they are not thinking? If you do, you should read this book Bouki Cuts Wood. This story is about a boy who has a goat. One day the boy went to cut a branch but he was sitting on the branch that he was about to cut. When he was cutting the wood a man came up to him and said that he was going to fall if he cut the wood more. Bouki did not listen and he ended up falling. Bouki ran after the man because he thought that he was a fortune teller. When Bouki was with the man he asked him, "When will I die?" The old man said when your goat bleats three times. Bouki knew his goat bleated a lot, so Bouki covered his goat's mouth with grass. Bouki went up the tree to cut wood when he heard his goat bleat three times. He fell straight down from the tree.

I highly recommend Reaching for the Moon, because the King of the Monkeys is so gullible to think there is a moon in the water. What happened to the monkeys? What is a golden moon?
The King has one of his strongest monkeys try reaching the “golden moon” in the pond, but they have mistaken it for what it was not. This sends many monkeys (including the king) to a sudden death.

I enjoyed this book because it was mostly filled with funniness, though at the end it is filled with sorrow. What makes this story unusual is that the monkeys believe that there is a golden moon stuck in the water. I would recommend this book to 4th graders, because I feel like this folktale can really grab the reader’s attention.

Origin: Tibetan
Read more here

Reviewed by: Judith Dahlia Montesinos

When Fox is talking to Mole, Mole asked Fox: if you could do something in the world what would it be? and Fox said: I would go to the moon with a grass rope. If you would do anything, what would it be? Read more in the book Moon Rope by Lois Ehlert.

The book talks about how Mole came out of his hole because he was finished with his worm hunting and he asked Fox if he could do anything in the world, what would it be. Fox said he wanted to go to the moon with a grass rope and he asked the animals if they would help him to get the grass rope to the moon.

It was a good book because it was an adventure for Fox. What made it unusual is that the rope did not break and that the animals could not get it up to the moon, but the birds did.

Do you like soup? If you do, do you like stone soup? This book is about three soldiers who come to a village and want a place to sleep and something to eat. The whole village hides their food and says they do not have any. The three soldiers offer the people some stone soup. All the people say that you can’t make stone soup. So everyone gives all the food they have and they make stone soup. If you want to learn the ending, read Stone Soup by Marcia Brown.

I liked this book because I like soup and It is unusual because they are making it out of stone.

How long can you walk? Can you walk for more than a day? Do you enjoy reading folktales? Would you do anything for your boyfriend, husband, or your crush? Well, a girl called Areti didn’t want the suitors that lived in their town so she made her own kind of man, she only wanted him for herself. She took almonds, three pounds of sugar, and three pounds of semolina. She pounded the almonds, added the sugar and semolina, and kneaded it all together, and she made herself a man! There was this ugly queen who was more like an ugly witch and she was needy so she took Mr. Semolina-Semolinus. She called him Mr. Semolina-Semolinus. She would do anything for him. She loved him more than anything in the whole wide world! If that was me I would do anything for that person.
Type of traditional literature:
folktale
Origin:
Greek folktale

Read more here!

Reviewed by: Clarissa

Ann Malaspina
If you believe in hope, The People Could Fly is a book that talks about a girl that thought there wasn’t any hope in slavery. That’s when hope to her and the other slaves.

The book is about African slaves that were brought to work on cotton plantations. After months of hard labor, something Spiritual happens.

I really liked this book because it taught me that even if you’re in a really bad situation there’s always a way of hope to get out of it. What made the story unusual was that there was a very old black slave named Toby that looked like he hated the world and everyone else in it and who would never talk to other people even though he was still a nice man that cured people when sickness came by. Toby told Sarah that he once saw people fly to freedom with his own eyes and that one day they will fly again. That was when one day Sarah realized that she was able to fly to freedom just like the other slaves.

Type of traditional literature:
Folktale
Origin:
African

Read more here!

Reviewed by: Harrysson

The Raja is giving rice to his people but suddenly stops to see would the famine last. A village girl goes to the Raja and says can you give me rice for 30 days to stop hunger.

One Grain of Rice is about a Raja in India who was giving rice to his people and also thinking that he was fair. But suddenly he stopped giving rice because he wanted to see how long the famine lasted. Then in the village a girl named Rani told the Raja to give her rice for thirty days to give people the ability to eat and stop their hunger. Then later Rani got an award.

I liked this book because it shows you have to be fair. Also you cannot be selfish with anything or people will not share with you, but to be honest I like that Rani helped the animals and people to stop hunger.

I would recommend this book to children who like math while reading stories.
Type of traditional Literature: Folktale
Origin: India
Read more here!
Reviewed by: Britani
