1. Texts that Teach
Quality literature provides high quality models of writing and eventually spillover into their own texts. Regardless of theme or topic, there's always some form of mentor text to get students interested, and provide a quality example of how its done.
2. Collaborative Work
Collaboratively developed character charts, where students list language associated with a character which can be referred to later. Collaborative activities can also involve poetry writing, in choosing exciting and precise language through the use of verbs and adjectives. Students can Think, Pair, Share, or work in larger groups.
3. Conferencing
Conferencing takes many forms. It should always be a student led process, so try not to preach. Listen to the person in the piece! Also, observation can help identify your starting point for a conversation if students are slow to engage. Don't forget peer -to-peer conferencing as a tool, but maybe don't have them do it with their best friend.
