In this time Korea was divided into a communist half and a American-occupied half, which was marked by the 38th parallel.  The United States got involved because stopping communism from spreading around the world, practicing the policy of containment*, was their most important goal. The Korean Peninsula before and during world war 11 had been occupied by Japan and it was in that time the USSR and the US were working together to liberate Korea of these Japanese forces, the Soviet Union 'freeing' the north and America the south, and in 1948 they were split by their two different forms of government along the 38th parallel. The North, a communist government led by Kim 11 Sung, the South, an anti-communist statesman Syngman Rhee. The fighting began in 1950 with Harry Truman supporting Syngman Rhee and Joseph Stalin with Kim 11 Sung. Another important figure that entered the war was Mao Zedong, leader of China, involving himself just after the UN forces crossed into North Korea. - The death and destruction of millions:
A total of 33,652 Americans died in battle and 36,914 from battle and including the other means of death from involving themselves in the war (information derived from cbsnews.com article on pentagon stats). Nearly 3 million North and South Koreans Died and more than half of them were civilians, and in the pre-battle 10,000 North and South Korean Soldiers also died. 180,000 Chinese soldiers were killed from Mao's forces.
- There is now a state of permanent contentious or belligerent behavior between North and South Korea. The 38th parallel is one of the most dangerous places in the world.
- North Korea was now dependent from China.
- Tone was set for the superpowers for the Cold War after showing that the US and the USSR could fight  a "proxy war" or "limited war" in a third world country.
