The Study of Sociology has Far-Reaching Implications

Hello! I’m Professor Stone and I've been teaching sociology as an adjunct (part-time) professor since 2001 after leaving the corporate world as a recruiter, and have been working at El Camino since 2004.

Sociology is the study of human social behavior, society, patterns of social relationships, social interaction, and culture that surrounds everyday life. While some sociologists conduct research that informs policy, others focus primarily on refining the theoretical understanding of social processes. Subject matter can range from micro-level analyses of society (i.e., of individual interaction and agency) to macro-level analyses (i.e., of systems and the social structure). There are many, many subfields within the umbrella of sociology and include the sociology of education, religion, sports, the media, 🤬 & gender, social stratification, and race & ethnic relations, to name a few.

Many students take sociology to fulfill a general education requirement but there are some who intend to major or minor in sociology. Whatever your reason for taking a sociology course, you will find that what you learn is highly valuable snd applicable to all aspects of one's life.

There are times when it feels like the world itself is falling apart—and this means we need to work even harder to learn and grow both as individuals and as a members of a larger society. Optimism is a mindset!

I consider myself a “visual sociologist” as well as a digital content creator. I am most interested in understanding human interaction at the micro-level. I have created my own sociology website that I use to guide my students in the study of society and maintain a library of curated content of sociological interest.

Earlier this year I published my first book which allowed me to share my knowledge and insight called Seeking Selfdom in the Age of Selfies.

Professor David Reed: Why I Value My Education in the Behavioral and Social Sciences

Hi, I’m Professor Reed, and I teach Political Science at El Camino College. You might be wondering whether or not you should join us in the Behavioral and Social Sciences Meta Major, and I would like to share with you what I have come to value about my education in the social sciences.

What I love about my social science education is twofold. On the one hand, I have gained a better appreciation of the scientific method and the kind of humility that comes from being willing to follow the evidence, even when it doesn’t confirm your hypothesis. I have gained a sense of calm from learning to recognize that sometimes we just don’t have the evidence to settle a question objectively and definitively. I have learned how to argue in good faith, and how to identify, and walk away from, people who are attempting to argue in bad faith.

On the other hand, I have also gained a better understanding of the diversity of human cultures, beliefs, values, and experiences. One’s own culture and way of life is like water to a fish: it’s something you don’t normally notice or have any critical awareness of. Learning about other societies and cultures allows you to gain a valuable, critical perspective on your own.

Professor Lucy Alamillo: Art History. Why Study it? What can I do with it?

I chose the field of Art History because I love stuff! And, I love stories. Objects and images have stories.
As a small child I was fascinated by materiality, how something could be shiny or rough, angular or curvy - and all things seemed to have a personality as if they were alive. That made me curious about all kinds of things and I became aware that things were never singular. A painting, jewelry, or clothing, would lead to another like music or food, and those led to people and their stories. Studying art history led me to learn that what all of humanity has in common is that we make and choose objects to speak for us, we are symbolic creatures. Art history is not just stories of "genius" artists, it is the history of language itself; of politics, religion, sociology, psychology, philosophy —all the things we have named to describe how we think and what we do. We make objects to symbolize those things. Art history is the history of invention. So when people ask me “what can I do with an art history degree?” I say “everything.”

Professor Barry Goldenberg: Welcome! You're at a great place!

Hi there! My name is Barry Goldenberg, and I am a U.S. History Professor here at El Camino College. I'm originally from the Midwest and used to live in New York City before now living here in the Los Angeles area. I'm also a first-generation student, and I understand that navigating institutions of higher learning can, at times, seem daunting. As you continue your educational journey, always know that all of the faculty and staff are committed to your success -- so please do reach out to us!

The Behavioral and Social Sciences Meta Major has a number of wonderful disciplines that will help you better understand our complex world, including history. When I was an undergraduate student, I had no clue what I wanted to study! I wanted to make the world a better place, but I did not know how -- and I realized that history could help me do that. In order to solve the challenges of today, I had to understand how and why they happened in the first place. In a history class, you will learn about why our political system operates as it does, why cities remain segregated, why racial inequalities exist all throughout society, how activism has occurred, and countless other topics relevant to your everyday lives. As the great novelist James Baldwin once wrote:

The great force of history comes from the fact that we carry it within us, are unconsciously controlled by it in many ways, and history is literally present in all that we do.

The knowledge you gain in a history class will be beneficial no matter your profession.

Congratulations on choosing El Camino College! One tip that I suggest is to take advantage of office hours. I encourage you to meet with your professors, and even though we are in a virtual setting, having a Zoom meeting or video chat is a great way to develop relationships with faculty. While your learning in the classroom is important, so too are the relationships you develop during your time at ECC and well beyond. Welcome again!

Professor Mina Majstorovic: Art History and Art Appreciation. What is art? Why do we study it?

Welcome! I’m professor Mina Majstorovic, and I teach Art History and Art Appreciation classes, here at El Camino College. If you are still debating whether or not you should join us in the Behavioral and Social Sciences Meta Major, let me tell you what I think about my particular field of study and classes I teach.

1. Art can mean different things to different people. Is it its strength or weakness?

2. Art can be everywhere if you know where and how to look. How is that possible?

3. Art has been around for thousands of years, and through the ages and different cultures it had evolved in a number of different ways. What are those ways?

Our Art History and Art Appreciation classes can give you answers to these and many other questions.

Art tells a story, allows us to see more than our personal past, reflects the culture within which it was produced, expresses our beliefs, helps us understand better the world around us.

Art is for everyone who wants to experience it, and it is often in more places that we might realize. Your personal experience with it and what meaning you can draw from it is always unique. Art can give you the opportunity to grow, learn, get in touch with your creative self, and tap into your emotions in the way that few other things can…

Finally, we live in a visual world, especially here in Los Angeles, and learning about images, and the way they communicate, is important for understanding better the world around us today. Our Art History and Art Appreciation classes will give you the opportunity for developing research, writing, critical, and analytical skills, which are central to any professional career.

A universal definition of beauty that fits every example may be impossible to find, but few of us would deny that the beautiful does indeed exist. History of Art is a catalogue of artworks that have tallied a host of positive votes from people who have spent their lives in pursuit of the beautiful, and who hold up road signs for us in our own quest. However, that the pursuit is endless, and the catalogue needs almost daily updating, while the road signs often vary from one culture to another. Isn't that a wonderful quest?

You might be wondering what you can do with a political science degree. This article from USA Today explains (I’ll include a TL;DR version below): https://www.usnews.com/education/best-graduate-schools/articles/2019-04-22/what-can-you-do-with-a-political-science-degree

TL;DR Version:

“According to political science career experts, each of the following types of careers is one where a political science degree is a plus:

Lobbyist

Lawyer

Diplomat or foreign service officer

Political scientist

Professor

Business executive

Political consultant

Government official

Policy analyst

Legislative assistant

Communications/public relations professional

Public opinion researcher or pollster”

The study of political science cultivates analytical and rhetorical skills, enhancing your ability to break down complex concepts, and communicate that complexity effectively to others. The methods used in political science are broadly applicable to many fields, and studying political science will develop your capacity to analyze and understand both quantitative (statistical) and qualitative data. In addition, political science, as the study of power and large-scale organizations (governments), will prepare you to work as part of a team, to act in a leadership of managerial capacity overseeing a team or larger organization, and to navigate the complex bureaucratic structures that govern our lives.

I still marvel at the fact that my 10th grade English teacher told me I probably would not graduate from high school and now, here I am with my Masters of Education in hand, entering my 20th year of teaching at El Camino College

What this misdirected high school teacher forgot to do is consider the following 3 things about me:

1. My lifelong passion for working with children. Passion can pull one through the toughest times. I know it sure helped in the moments I felt like giving up!

2. My determination not to let my Learning Disability be a barrier, but rather, a unique opportunity to approach life and learning in a different way. This included cultivating excellent problem-solving skills and nurturing my creativity.

3. Not all teachers were like this English teacher. There were other teachers in my life who supported my academic challenges in what sometimes felt like an unforgiving system. The care and investment by these teachers fueled my dedication to pay it forward.

So, here I am! My name is Susan Baxter, I am part time faculty with the Childhood Education Department. I feel at home here at El Camino because I work with an amazing group of Faculty who are as invested and thoughtful in their dedication to children. These individuals also are also dedicated to the students we teach. - our future teachers, parents and social service providers who want to advocate for children too!

I invite you to join the many academic opportunities offered in the Behavior and Science Division. Fuel or find your passion, take advantage of all the resources the College offers, If you are interested in understanding more about children and how to support their development in a world that feels upside down for many people, especially children , I invite you to come and take a class with us.

Hello everyone, welcome to El Camino College!

My name is Jac and I am a recent graduate of El Camino and currently a political science tutor on campus. Like many of you, I didn't know what I wanted to major in. I changed my major three times before finally choosing to major in Political Science. I even took a break from El Camino at one point to pursue music. This time in your life is a chance to explore all of what El Camino has to offer. When I finally took advantage of the resources at El Camino, it changed my life.

I put together a guide of what I wish someone had told me when I started at El Camino. This guide consists of what I found the most helpful during my time at El Camino. It will help you navigate through your academic career. I had to navigate some aspects of El Camino on my own when I started because I hadn't found a support network yet. This guide will help you find your support network so you can also succeed during your time at El Camino.

If you choose to pick a major under the department of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSS), know that it is the best department (in my opinion). Everyone in the department deeply cares about their students and wants to see them succeed. I can only hope that the faculty and staff at my university will live up to the standard that they set.

Best of luck and consider joining the Political Science Club. They're currently accepting applications for the 2020-2021 cabinet positions.

Note: all underlined titles in the PDF are hyperlinked.

Professor Angela Simon: I love Psychology!!! You can too!!!

Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. Now that I've given the formal definition, let's have fun!!! Psychologists can be practitioners (e.g., therapists/clinicians), teachers, and/or researchers. The level of education you will need to attain in Psychology depends on your goals. I recommend the APA website below to find out more than you ever wanted to know about Psychology. You may be especially interested in the Careers portion. Psychology is all around us!!! Psychology can help us address timely questions: In this age of COVID-19, why won't some people wear masks? Why do we so quickly stereotype others who are not like us and what can we do to prevent this? How do we get younger people to actually vote? Why is 2020 such a painful year and can we begin 2021 sooner than later?!? (That last one is not really a Psychology question, but a question nonetheless!!!) I love Psychology for several reasons. My favorite is that the principles of Psychology can be so easily applied to bettering our own and others' lives. Psychology gives you knowledge that you will use for a lifetime: Psychology can help you fall in love, then fall out of love; can help you train your pets and your children; can help you help your friends who suffer from anxiety and depression. Sound good to you? Think I talk too much? Please feel free to address your questions, comments, and Psychology jokes to me at asimon@elcamino.edu. You won't regret it!!!

Welcome and congratulations on beginning your educational journey at El Camino College! My name is Orion Teal, a professor of US History. While I could write for days about how important it is to study our past, especially amid these turbulent times, I instead wanted to raise your awareness about a unique opportunity in out Meta Major called “MyPath.” This is a course model, largely in the Behavioral and Social Sciences, designed to work toward achieving greater “Educational Equity” at El Camino College. MyPath courses are guided by the idea that it is an instructor’s primary responsibility to ensure all students willing to put in the effort are given the tools and encouragement that they need to succeed. Equity-minded instruction recognizes that students have varying degrees of preparation for college and that these disparities are often tied to students’ zip codes and social backgrounds. Educational equity seeks to level the playing field for groups that have been underserved by, or underrepresented in, higher education.

MyPath designated courses include:

-Culturally responsive curriculum that speaks directly to students’ diverse backgrounds and experiences.

-Course themes that focus on social justice issues that matter to our students.

MyPATH courses also focus on student success. They feature:

-Partnerships with counselors to assist students in academic/career planning.

-Career, major and transfer exploration.

-PASS (Peer Assisted Study Sessions) Mentor Program to assist students with studying and completing assignments.
-Embedded librarian partners to guide you through the research process and help improve your information literacy.

More information about the program can be found here:

https://www.elcamino.edu/administration/vpaa/sep/bss-sea-pathway.aspx

We look forward to seeing you in MyPATH courses!

We LOVE anthropology. Why? We always wanted to learn about other societies: how they view their world; what values they hold; the actions that make up their customs; and more!

Anthropologists visit societies all around the world. Through fieldwork they interact with members of a group and observe their way of life. From the tropical rainforests of the Amazon, to the Arctic tundra, to the African savanna, and to the highest peaks of the Andes mountain range: anthropologists have been there, studying the local ways of living.

We are interested in learning about every aspect of what it means to be human. We study our cultural past through Archaeology, and our cultural present through Cultural Anthropology. Our discipline also investigates human evolution and human variation through Biological Anthropology. The ability to use language is a unique aspect of being human and is studied through Linguistic Anthropology. These fields together, comprise a very holists approach to the study of being human.

The Anthropology Department at El Camino College is dedicated to the study of humankind. We offer a long list of courses that collectively, address the different aspects of the human condition. In addition to classes in the four fields stated above, we also have specialty courses with topics ranging from gender studies, to religion, to the study of Native Peoples, and coming soon – Museum Studies! We are excited to offer this hands-on, applied learning experience by Fall 2023.

We have a very active Anthropology Department and student Anthropology Club. Some activities include:

Inviting Guest Speakers to talk about their work in different fields of Anthropology

Hosting a Dia de los Muertos event in the Fall

Celebrating World Anthropology Day in February

Hosting our Annual Student Research Symposium in the Spring

Fieldtrips to local museums and cultural events

You can get involved! Anthropology does a body good.

-got culture?
