Malcolm and his friend “Shorty” met up and moved back to Boston, they soon were arrested and convicted of burglary

Malcolm was sentenced 10 years to prison, but granted parole after 7 years

During this time Malcolm brother came to visit often and he used this as a time for self enlightenment

Brother belonged to Nation of Islam and started teaching Malcolm about this, he became very interested in this and soon began studying Muhammad Elijah's work

In 1952, when Malcolm was granted parole he was a devoted follower of Muhammad and changed his last name of “Little” into “X” because Little was too much like a slave name and X represented the loss of his tribal name

This lead to Muhammad suspending him from the Nation of Islam because he felt threatened by Malcolm's power and followers

After feeling drawn to the Nation of Islam he began making a name for himself within it

Malcolm had firmly established himself as the number-two man within the organization and was becoming far more famous than his superior, Elijah Muhammad

Due largely to Malcolm X's influence, the Nation of Islam doubled in size from 1955 to 1960, from 15 temples to 30

While Malcolm X was making enemies among the white establishment, he was quietly making more dangerous ones within the Nation of Islam

Some of Elijah Muhammad's lieutenants viewed him as overly ambitious and as a threat to the status of their leader

After deciding to break away from the Nation of Islam Malcolm X decided to form his own Muslim mosque

During a trip to Mecca in the 1960's, he realized the Muhammad had the wrong idea the whole time. He had been thinking of all whites as devils when that was not true.

 Malcolm decided to change to a more orthodox Islam stand point

With this he decided to try and be more "all-encompassing" in uniting blacks, Muslim, and non-Muslim, to end racial discrimination all together 

The group he formed was called, Organization of Afro-American Unity, this new approach made him closer with MLK
