Jamestown-The London company set about 100 men, searching to find fortune in the Americas. The house of burgesses formed in 1618 and established the first government in the British colonies. Jamestown and the Indians did not get along very well, until John Smith and Indian girl Pocahontas met, who later married John Rolfe and brought peace between the Indians and Jamestown. Jamestowns main economic feature was tobacco, the most important cash crop. The labor involved for farming tobacco was hard work, so the English brought in African slaves to labor the crop.

Plymouth- Plymouth was initially settled for religious freedom. The pilgrims were religious separatists who were seeking a new home for the community. William Bedford let a group of 100 pilgrims aboard the Mayflower and 1620. A navigational error caused the pilgrims to land in present day Massachusetts. The pilgrims established civil government using the Mayflower compact. With help from the nearby Indians, the Wampanoags Who warmly welcomed them, the natives taught them how to plant crops, trap animals, and catch fish.Without the Indians, they wouldn't have survived the first winter. After the harvest, the pilgrims invited the Indians to a feast which is now called Thanksgiving.

The Mayflower compact was the first agreement for self government to be created an enforced in America. On the two-month journey from England, the pilgrims created a document where they all agreed of what rules were going to be set and how's the government was going to be ran in the colony. It was been signed by all of the men on the ship.

All of the first 13 colonies were a self governed democracy. All of the government systems had a governor, a governors court, and a court system. The governor held executive power in the colony and meetings were held to discuss issues such as town meeting and town government meetings. Most governments were based on the Bible.

Christopher Columbus' journey:
after getting a sponsorship to what Columbus thought was the Indies by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, Columbus actually landed in what is now known as the Americas.Columbus thought instead of going east and sailing around Asia that you could sail west and go straight to the Indies. Taking the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria in 1492 Christopher sailed west to what is now known as the Americas, thinking it was the Indies. But he actually landed in what is now known as the Caribbean. He returned to Spain informing the king and queen that he had found a faster route to the Indies. Inspiring much of Europe to go west, Columbus died still thinking that he had found the faster route to the Indies. But later on Amerigo Vespucci had found that it was in fact the Americas that started the curiosity of new land exploration.
