To me, the golden rule means more than just a repeated saying. You can treat people the way they want to be treated by acting the morals and values you believe in. Giving out love means making others feel included and that they matter, which is important especially to the people who feel alone. Father Greg Boyle said,"" Compassion isn't just about feeling the pain of others; it's about bringing them in toward yourself. If we love what God loves, then, in compassion, margins get erased. " Being compassionate as God is compassionate," means the dismantling of barriers that exclude ""(75).  Father Greg Boyle was able to dismantle some of the barriers that exclude gang members by creating the book Tattoos on the Heart and raising awareness to the situations the previous gang members are in. Erasing the barriers that exclude can mean reaching out to someone you have never reached out to before. It also means loving and accepting others for who they are.  Father Greg Boyle also said, " love never fails"(125). Persistence is what gets somebody through the hard times of their life. At one time or another, everybody will go through a rough time in their life. Persistence is what will get you through that time. It is  not very possible to treat somebody with persistence, but you can show an example of it. One person in my life who showed me what it is like to be persistent is my father. He persisted through the challenging academic times of his life, working hard to achieve his goal of becoming a successful lawyer, but the main time he was an example of persistence is when he was fighting a battle against cancer. Through the years of his battle, he was able to stay strong and hopeful as well as deal with the medical treatments that could not have been fun without complaining. These examples of persistence inspired me to power through the times of my life now, and in the future that I find as a hard time. I have grown throughout the year by trying to live out the golden rule by exemplifying these morals and values that are important to me. Also, at the beginning of the year I did not realize that these values were so important. High school especially has allowed me to grow through the golden rule because I understand in a deeper way the power of creating an including environment can positively affect someone.  I am not a very religious person, but I do believe in the importance of these morals and values and I think God recognizes that as well.
