Definition: Prewriting is the getting ready to write stage that includes choosing a topic, organizing ideas, and thinking about the audience, genre, and purpose of the piece.

Personal Experience: When writing papers for school, I always had to use an outline or jot down my ideas before attempting to write. This helped me organize my thoughts. I still do it to this day.

Observation: When working as an ESL teacher, some of my students benefited from using graphic organizers to organize their thoughts before attempting to write about a topic.

Definition: Drafting is the stage when writers focus on putting ideas on paper; the rough draft is developed. It is more important to focus on ideas than writing conventions at this stage.

Personal Experience: I have a tendency to want my draft to be perfect the first time, I have to remind myself that spelling and punctuation should not be my focus as I write my first draft.

Observation: When working with one of my clients with ASD, she would frequently write stories for fun on the computer. She mostly would draft a story about how her day was going so far, it was great to see her express her ideas in writing.

Definition: Revising is the stage where you clarify and refine the writing in the draft. This usually includes sharing drafts with others and receiving constructive feedback.

Personal Experience: When applying to my first job as an instructional assistant, I had help revising my resume and cover letter from a friend at work. I was nervous to share what I had written but she gave excellent feedback on how to better express some of the points I was making. It helped, I got the job!

Observation: When teaching 3rd grade, my students were writing poetry/songs. They worked in groups to help one another by giving feedback about the flow of their work.

Definition: Editing is the stage where you polish your work by focusing on writing conventions and preparing the final draft. This occurs after setting the draft aside for a couple of days to ensure you have fresh eyes.

Personal Experience: I find writing the final draft of something very satisfying. I also have a tendency to want to finalize something the day I originally write it but have found waiting is better because I can see it with "fresh eyes."

Observation: When I was a teacher's assistant in Kindergarten, I was very exciting to see students creating their books about holidays around the world. They used their edited drafts (teacher would scribe what students said about their pictures) about each holiday to draw and write their book.

Definition: Publishing is the stage of writing where writers share their final work with an audience.

Personal Experience: My final capstone project for my undergraduate degree in Spanish was to write a research paper on a topic of interest. This was shared with my peers in the Spanish Department when I presented my work to them.

Observation: When I taught 3rd Grade, my students published their poetry and songs by performing them to their peers.
