The first footsteps of a human on the moon where from an American

A moment for a America that helped assert global dominance (Harris, 2012). The first man landing on the moon was Neil Armstrong. It was at a time that television where all over the world so everyone could watch the first human being walking on the moon. About 600 million people witnessed it on tv or radio (Harris, 2012). As Neil Armstrong said in July 1969, when he stepped on the surface: ‘’ That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.’’

President Kennedy was the one who urged America in 1961 to go reach the moon . Armstrong standing on the moon and putting the American flag on it, was a historical moment. This historical moment was needed after the horrors of the Kennedy killing in 1963 (Harris, 2012). The nation was afraid of Russia, but after this moment, the message was sent that America could compete in the cold war.

The moment was not for Armstrong himself, but for his nation. For him it was about all the engineers that worked so hard to get him to the moon. Moreover, it was to celebrate the wealthiest and most powerful nation of the world and the achievement. It was an amazing experience for America and the world, but unfortunately it did not, in the end, lead America anywhere (Harris, 2012).

List of sources

https://www.theguardian.com/science/2012/aug/25/man-moon-american-century

The Great Depression

One of the darkest economic times in American history, is called The Great Depression. It lasted from 1929 to 1939 (History, n.d.). It began with ‘Black Thursday’, 24 October, 1929 (Amadeo, 2017.). After a stock market crash, Wall street was into a lot of panic and therefore wiped out millions of investors. On that day a record of 12.9 million shares were traded. Years of dropping consumer spending and investment were followed. Thereby, at 1933, the Great Depression reached its lowest point (History, n.d.). About 15 million Americans were unemployed and almost half the country’s banks had failed. A time were farmers lost their farm, there were a lot of homeless ‘hobos’ and Wall Street was in total panic.

Franklin D. Roosevelt, the man that helped resolve the Great Depression. The country elected him in 1932, because he promised to end the Great Depression (Amadeo, 2017). He signed, within 100 days, the New Deal into law. The New Deal caused jobs, allow unionization and provide unemployment insurance. Some of these programs of the New Deal still exist now. Nonetheless, many people argue about what ended the Great Depression. People think that not the New Deal ended the Great Depression, but World War II did. However, Roosevelt had spent as much on the New Deal as he did during the War (Amadeo, 2017). Due to the War, the expanding industrial production the unemployment rate was below its pre-Depression level (History, n.d.).

List of sources

https://www.thebalance.com/the-great-depression-of-1929-3306033

http://www.history.com/topics/great-depression

‘’I have a dream.’’ It is the speech that we still remember of Martin Luther King Jr. nowadays. He played a key role, as Baptist minister and social activist, in the civil rights movement of American from around 1950 till 1968 (History, n.d.). Events where his name was mentioned are for instance the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the March on Washington. Furthermore, he has won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

With a number of civil rights and religious groups, King organized the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom (History, n.d.). On 28 August, 1963 about 200,000 to 300,000 people attended the March on Washington. For the American civil rights it was a moment of history and a passage for the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Moreover, King achieved it that the Congress passed the Voting Rights Act in August 1965. This guaranteed the right to vote for all African Americans (Seattle Times, n.d.).

King could not finish all his plans, for example his poverty plans because death came to early on April 4, 1968 (Seattle Times, n.d.). He was shot in the neck by a rifle bullet when he was standing outside on a balcony. Numerous waves of violence in different cities where caused because of his death. Nonetheless, King’s legacy is still living on, through his birthday January 15th that has become a national holiday. The holiday is celebrated with educational programs, concerts and artistic displays (Seattle Times, n.d.).

List of sources:

http://www.history.com/topics/black-history/martin-luther-king-jr

http://projects.seattletimes.com/mlk/bio.html#life

American Indian and Alaska Native tribes and villages

Own culture, language and history. Around 566 federally recognized American Indian and Alaska tribes and villages exist in America (Indianyouth, n.d.). They all have unique traditions and distinct styles of housing, but also different clothes and food.

The ‘Indian Wars’, during the 18th and 19th century, the U.S. Government was harsh aggressive towards Native people (Indianyouth, n.d.). For Native people the consequence was that they lost their homelands. The U.S. Government placed the American Indians in reservations, where lots of tribes were split and the reservations caused some traditional enemies to live with each other. Some laws even made sure to destroy the tribe as a social unit, for instance the law of Dawes Act in 1887.

It even led up in 1800 to mid-1900 to place Native children in Christian boarding schools. Causing them to leave home and their family. The boarding schools were severe strict, for example the Native children were not allowed to speak their own language or practice their traditions (Indianyouth, n.d.). During the period many children died and those who survived returned home after many years, but were not connected with their family and traditions anymore.

It is insane that the Native people were treated like that. Nowadays, the tribes that still live, try to keep their own traditions and cultures. For the tribes, the most important parts now are their language and ceremony. As the site Indianyouth (n.d.) says: ‘’… new native generation is taught to live with dignity, character and pride.’’ The organisation Running Strong helps several Native communities to bring strength and healing and hope for the new American Indian youth (Indianyouth, n.d.).

List of sources:

http://indianyouth.org/american-indian-life/traditions-culture
