If you ever try to buy them, you know what they stand for," These lyrics make the listener question what the purpose of the war is, it's mostly directed to the soldiers fighting, the people who are carrying out the actions and actively partaking in this, asking them to be introspective about why they're fighting in this war. It also brings up the point that politicians are lying to citizens, proving another point that citizens should sooner be informed truthfully before going to such great lengths to serve. This is exemplified in the line about slavery, as it encourages listeners to really reflect upon the state that the States were in and if going off to fight for a country that was so rampant with slavery is the genuine patriotic act it can be thought of, thought provoking in the juxtaposition that while the US is known for being free due to its founding coming from rebelling against being micromanaged, the slavery that is so heavily ingrained in its history is an unavoidable fact. It is another point included about the genuineness of the actions of politicians. His friend who taught him how to play guitar debated politics with him, thus giving him an interest in politics. He started out writing newspaper articles on radical themes, and eventually, his two interests -- politics and music -- merged. As a result, Ochs was led to writing songs about topical issues. He faced bitter disappointment on the journalism front, and so he headed to New York to become a folksinger who focused passionately on many hot-button topics, chief among them being war. That was his way of describing his own songs, as "topical songs" rather than "protest songs".

The song "What Are You Fighting For?" was recorded during the year 1963, the year where Phil Ochs was in an unusually (to the people close to him) emotional state due to the assassination of John F. We're fighting the Vietnam war, trying to fix the problems in their country while not even fixed our own issues. It proves a point that we truthfully have no real reason to be in the war because it's not our fight. Our fight should truly be from within. It was a common point made during the time that those who faced extreme unfortunates in the States had their misery exemplified by the focus on exterior issues that shouldn't even be issues since the motive to fight was out of fear of another country's system spreading. Also the song talks about how our politicians have lied to us. If our politicians need to lie to us about what happened in Vietnam, why should soldiers fight for an country that's dishonest? You can see them holding children and the fear on their face, it was truthfully a dangerous war for something the people in the United States thought had no point fighting for. In the protest photo with the signs, it can be seen the amount of dead. It's such a high amount, it impacts the viewer and also make the viewer ask themselves why. It makes the viewers want to know why the soldiers are still fighting in Vietnam, just like the song states.
