This is a space for you to revisit familiar and unfamiliar narratives, stories, histories and perspectives on Vietnam before and after the war. You are welcome to engage with this space by either discussing and/or posting your thoughts and ideas individually and at your own pace. TW: Some of the materials here talk about war, violence, and loss of life. These are real events from history that can feel sad or upsetting. You don’t have to read every single part at once — take breaks if you need to. If something feels heavy, you can step away and come back later. Remember: we’re learning about these events to understand people’s experiences and how history shapes our world today.

For many years, France controlled Vietnam as a colony. During World War II, Japan took over Vietnam. A Vietnamese leader named Ho Chi Minh fought to make Vietnam free and independent. After the war ended in 1945, Ho said Vietnam was independent, but France wanted to control it again. This caused fighting from 1946-1954. In 1954, Vietnam was split into two parts: North Vietnam (with a communist government and capital in Hanoi) and South Vietnam (with an anti-communist government helped by America, with capital in Saigon). The two parts were supposed to become one country again after the elections in 1956, but the elections never happened.

Make visual comparisons or timelines.

Record voice notes explaining your thoughts.

Share personal connections (if comfortable).

Discuss with a partner and post joint responses.

Record discussions or voice explanations.

The Vietnam War was part of a bigger conflict called the Cold War between communist and non-communist countries. North Vietnam got weapons and help from the Soviet Union and China. South Vietnam got help from the United States. American leaders worried that if Vietnam became communist, other nearby countries would become communist too (called the "domino theory"). Starting in the 1950s, America sent military advisors. In 1965, America began sending soldiers to fight. By 1968, over 500,000 American soldiers were in Vietnam. Vietnamese people call this "the American War."

Make visual comparisons or timelines.

Record voice notes explaining your thoughts.

Share personal connections (if comfortable).

Discuss with a partner and post joint responses.

Record discussions or voice explanations.

The war lasted over 20 years (1954-1975). Most fighting was guerrilla warfare - surprise attacks and hiding in jungles. America dropped millions of bombs and used chemicals like Agent Orange to kill plants and crops. In 1968, communist forces attacked many cities at the same time (called the Tet Offensive). Many Americans protested against the war at home. More than 3 million people died in the war - soldiers and regular people. Whole villages were destroyed, and millions of Vietnamese people lost their homes.

Make visual comparisons or timelines.

Record voice notes explaining your thoughts.

Share personal connections (if comfortable).

Discuss with a partner and post joint responses.

Record discussions or voice explanations.

Connect this to Ha's Journey So Far -- Write or record individually or in pairs and groups.

In 1973, America signed a peace agreement and took its soldiers home, but North and South Vietnam kept fighting. In 1975, North Vietnam won, and the whole country became communist. Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City. The war left Vietnam badly damaged - destroyed towns, poisoned land, and millions of homeless people. Many Vietnamese families had to leave their country and start new lives in other places as refugees.
