I am currently working with Cameron Freeman and Daniel Lambert.

Individual unique skills & influences everyone has in your group to bring to the table

Daniel is very good at working with his large amount of pedals and manipulating them, we will be developing on this through the creation proccess of our songs.
Cameron is a very interesting songwriter that writes unpredictable songs and chord progressions which I really like. He also has a nice voice that isnt too forced and has a nice timbre.
I have a large influence of funk/jazz music that inspires my chord writing, I also like alot of 90s guitar bands like sonic youth and pavement that use interesting guitar noises and guitar tunings. Daniel has alot of influence from competent songwriters like Sam Fender and Cameron from bands like Radiohead. I think this acculmination of various styles works well.

Initial choice of material – what 2 tracks are you thinking of developing for this module?
Songs like 'The Diamond Sea' by Sonic Youth, 'Rain' by the Beatles or 'Covert Discretion' by Freeman could work with this.

What areas of innovation do you think you might focus on?
I currently have an interest in writing some songs with different guitar tunings and sonic textures. I also think reharmoninsing or changing the instrumentation of a cover would be interesting.

This allowed me to be more free and not rely on my muscle memory and common things that Id usually play on guitar.
- Collaboration really helped last term as well as it allowed me to bounce ideas off for the other instruments with people rather than being left to do that by myself. The other musicians also helped give ideas that I wouldn't have intially thought about.

What can I do differently this time?
- Steady padlet entries over the term
- Record EVERYTHING
- Better production quality

1. The difference between innovation is that innovation is using new ideas/concepts to create something new; often improving on an existing idea or product, wheras invention is creating something completely original often to solve a problem.

2. Invention can inspire innovation through people improving on exisiting ideas or things. People may be encouraged or inspired by past inventor's problem solving and this gives them enthusiasm to innovate their own concept.

Personal/Group Aims:
We want to create innovative and creative music combining elements like interesting sonic textures, unpredicatable harmony etc.
I personally would like to improve my contribution to the songwriting element as a instrumentalist and what sonic things I can bring to the table.

Material:
Currently we have been playing a mixture of authentic covers including 'Rain' by The Beatles and 'Mayonnaise' by The Smashing Pumpkins. I think moving forward we want to create an original song and also do a creative cover using elements like electronic instruments and distortion feedback.

Incoporating Innovation:
One ideas is to experiment with alternate guitar tunings and combining this with standard tuning guitars and see what harmonic elements we can get from this. Also I want to experiment with reharmonisation and creating innovative covers with this and also different instrumentation. I also personally want to focus on being more melodic and sonically interesting with my playing in instrumental sections; moving away from penatonic licks and using more dissonant and sustained guitar sounds.

Roles:
Our roles in the group are quite fluid as we often switch instruments but most of the time it is myself on guitar, Dan Lambert on guitar and backing vocals and Cameron Freeman on vocals and bass. For our original song my musical role is rhythm guitar, I also wrote the songs chord progression, instrumental sections and chorus lead lines. Cameron and Dan have been writing the vocals and lyrics along with ideas for motifs and parts of the instrumentals.

Related Research Proposed Areas:
Some artists that would be relevant to research regarding similar kinds of innovation could include; Sonic Youth, Pavement, My Bloody Valentine. It could also be useful to do some research into equipment and electronic devices, things like automation and loops.

Potential Challenges:
One challenge is that there is not a dedicated drummer in our group, this can make it hard to make a defintive rhythm and structure to the song. Potential solutions include using a drum machine or borrowing a drummer from another group in the lesson. Another challenge for me personally is creating vocal melodies/hooks for the songs which means I can find it hard to write something that doesnt sound repetitive. I have found using my guitar to write melodies can help and then bouncing these ideas off someone else in the group.

O (the band) are a really cool new band comprised of Tash Keary (Drums) and Joe Henwood (Sax). They have a pretty unique sound that has elements of drum and bass, jazz and funk. His baritone sax is connected to a set of pedals that can drastically change the saxophone sound. They can achieve a huge sound for a 2 piece with these pedals, for example an octave pedal allows Henwood to get really deep sub-bass from his saxophone and along with distortion, this gets a huge sound. I think the approach to this kind of genre as a 2 piece is really innovative and an interesting use of technology.

All I Need - Radiohead

- Did innovation already exist within this track?
The band used a fan recorded video of them performing the track live as a reference when recording. They were inspired by the crunchy and distorted style of the video recording. Johnny Greenwood wanted to capture the sensation of the white noise generated by a band playing in a room 'when all this chaos kicks up'. However unable to do this in a professional studio, Greenwood recorded a string section playing every note of the scale, blanketing the frequencies to replicate this white noise sound.

- Recreating, adapating, interpreting.
We have decided to adapt and experiment with changing the sound.

-What am i exploring to experiment with innovation when covering the song?
Using a harmonizer octaves to create a big sound, inspired by the disorted background sounds of the original.
Potentially messing around with different harmony as the song is very repetitive.
Drum machines as we dont have a drummer, could experiment with the audio of these.

'Eventually' by Tame Impala
First performance in lesson

Currently we are doing a cover of Tame Impala's song 'Eventually' from their 2015 release 'Currents'. This is for my live performance track. I am playing a Casio synth and drums, Dan Lambert is playing guitar and singing.
Our innovation points are the use of multi-instrumentation (in the pre-chorus sections I am playing the kick and snare whilst holding the chords on the synth), the drums are also processed with triggers to have a more electronic 808 sound blended in. I am also not playing my primary instrument, I am on the guitar pathway. Dan similarly is singing. He is also using a looper pedal creatively by making a pad ambient sound from looped arpeggios. This is created at the beginning of the song then reintroduced in the prechorus.
