Early Greece helped Western Civilization in many ways. One of the most important roles was the government. Most Greek city-states at this time used more oligarchy and dictatorships for their governments. One city-state in particular used a whole new and different government.
The ruler of Athens, Solon, used a democracy. This was special because this type of government gives the people a voice on choices with their city-state. This is important because many western countries now use democracy. The most famous one is the United States if America. Greece was also known for Dramas. Greece did usually have trilogies for their plays. All of the plays had themes about life in general. The Greek have made huge discoveries in the field of philosophy. The most famous one was Socrates. He was able to build a method that would help learners discover the question all by them selves. This was a question and answer based method. It allowed people to look for reasoning instead of everything based off of religion or gods. One more important part that the Greeks were great at, was the art. Greek art was based off the idea of eternal ideas. They also created temples or vases that would worship the gods of this time.

Rome was also known for their poetry like the author Virgil. The Romans also tried to do the same art like the Greeks. They had the same ideas but took a more realistic move in their art work. Romans also used the same architecture as the Greeks for their buildings shape wise. The Romans were able to take it a step higher by being able to use concrete to help build bigger buildings.

The cit-state of Mycenae was the first city-state in Greece. Between 1600-1100 Before Christ. 1400-1200 B.C. this city-state created its own monarchy and started to flourished. Between 1100-750 B.C., Mycenae entered the "Dark Ages". This was when food source was scarce and the population started to decline. During this time, Homer and other authors created epic poems to tells stories of a great hero. Polis became popular by 750 B.C. The two most famous city-states that had one of these two types of government were Athens and Sparta. Athens was more of a democracy and believed education was key. Sparta had more of an oligarchy government. Sparta overall was a more militarized city-state. 594 B.C., Solon comes into power and didn't really changed much. Cleisthenes became the ruler in 507 B.C. and helped restore the government. From 500 to 338 B.C, the classic period began with two majors wars where the Greeks won. The Age of Pericles started soon and Athens government is now a direct democracy. Since the city-states of Athens and Sparta were worrying about one another, The Great Peloponnesian war began. After the war, Athens surrendered and there was no main authority of Greece at this time. Greek was known for art and the idea of balance. Also for the temples and pots being painted for the gods. Dramas were huge during this time period. They had a central theme. Socrates became one of the known philosophers during this time. He created the Socratic method. This allowed students to make the judgement themselves. Plato also had his ideal government in his book The Republic . Aristotle found the best three governments based of the constitution of 158 states. Alexander The Great became leader of Macedonia at 20 and took the Persian empire by 331 B.C. The Hellenistic Era was known for the expansion of the empire and the spreading of Greek ideas. Caesar"s adopted son, Augustus, soon came into power after if father's death. Then he became the first emperor and the Romans fell around 400 C.E.

Started after Judaea was controlled by a procurator and the Jewish people being upset. Jesus came around afterwords and taught his preaching. People thought Jesus was going to revolt and he was crucified. Then he rose form the dead and other people were staring to preach his lessons. Writing soon came out and this allowed for people to communicate his teachings. They were able to write the bible. Churches were starting to establish in major cities and preach the old and new testaments. Even though the Roman emperors would try to eliminate this group, people in the Roman empire were able to fallow the teachings and be a christian. Christianity offered people to be in a community, there was more focus on the poor and the slaved. Christianity preached that everyone is treated equal. Soon, Constantine was the first emperor that was a Christian. Then by the time Theodosius came to power, Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire.
