-Oral language is the foundation of literacy
-As ELLs learn a new language, making errors is inevitable and part of the language acquisition process
-It is educators responsibility to scaffold information and provide informal opportunities for ELLs to negotiate meaning
-You must adapt the language environment of your classroom to enable ELLs to participate
-The Ontario Ministry of Education identifies three ways that teachers should use assessment information to monitor English-language development among ELLs: assessment for learning, assessment as learning, and assessment of learning,

-Research, such as Genesee et al., suggest that oral language activities are essential in creating effective programs for English language learners in mainstream classrooms
-Coelho 2007: Connect ELLs understanding of L2 through their real world interests.
-Krashen 1981: Comprehension precedes production; meaning language acquisition is a slow process. Giving students the opportunity to produce content they are interested in, in a low-anxiety situation, and when they are ready will help ELLs improve.
-CILT: National Centre for Languages, 2006; Thomas & Collier, 2002:
"students who continue to develop age-appropriate proficiency in their own language do better in school, and in learning English, than students who
abandon their first language – and often do better than monolingual English-speaking students as well."

-Conduct surveys at the beginning of the year (for both students and parents) to learn about the language diversity in your classroom and find ways to incorporate that diversity into the curriculum
-Define terms, such as first, second, and additional languages as a class
-Allow meaningful collaboration and co-operative learning strategies between students to connect and learn from each other rather than just about one another (small groups with clear and concise routines, timelines, and expectations)
-Through collaborative inquiry, guide students in conversational and conflict-resolution strategies
-Create a space where first languages are welcome
-Respect the silent period (as explained by Krashen) as ELLs are absorbing language and will participate when they feel ready to do so.

Are you aware of your mode of speech? (modifying speed, vocabulary, sentence structure, your gestures, facial expressions etc.) Are you providing additional contextual support? (models, toys, manipulatives, pictures, charts, flash cards, vocabulary lists, posters, banners, as well as demonstrations and hands-on activities) Are you modelling language use? (Pronunciation, syntax, linking words) Are you providing supportive feedback? (pointing out errors publicly can have negative effects on ELLs, it is best to give indirect feedback by modelling the correct form)
