1. Self - Reflection

Through this YK CBL programme, I have gained invaluable insight on the Sustainable Development Goals and also the intricacies and issues that plague our education system. Although we have come a long way in realising the SDGs, we are definitely still falling short on the education front.

I have also learnt that you do not need to be a leader in order to spark some change towards a certain cause especially when it comes to community work. The society functions based on herd mentality and if enough of us are working towards a certain goal be it to eradicate poverty or reforn our education system, soon we will reach a tipping point and others will chime in to help.

2. My Pledge and Commitment

Joining the workforce after graduating, I intend to make meaningful contributions be it monetary aid or volunteering myself towards improving the quality of life and education for those in rural areas back in Kedah.

3. Personal Development Plan (PDP)

- Getting to know the severity of the situation in the rural areas by visiting and talking to locals.
- Identifying and volunteering in NGOs that have the same values and aspirations as my pledge and commitment
- Making small differences each day towards the cause.

1. Self-Reflection

Through this year's YKPSP programme, I gained a deeper insight into the realities on the ground of humanitarian work and running an NGO, their core principles, and the challenges they face. Furthermore, being able to examine the SDGs in the context of our everyday lives in the Critical Discourse lab was very informative. Hearing from other scholars talk about the meaningful initiatives they are involved in was inspiring as well.

2. My Pledge and Commitment

In work, I hope to be able to utilise my knowledge for the betterment of society as a whole. Besides that, I will contribute back to society by volunteering with non-profit organisations outside of work as well as support meaningful causes by donating.

3. Personal Development Plan

- Gain more fieldwork experience by volunteering with an NGO
- Continue to educate myself on current issues and technical knowledge by reading and taking online courses
- Be more proactive and take initiatives in life

Self-Reflection

I have learnt that when it comes to bringing about meaningful change, it is not enough for a leader to be motivated by good intentions and ambitions. My Pledge and Commitment

From my observation and input from the programme, I have concluded that education is the most effective avenue for long term community development. I will get more involved in efforts to help improve and make education more accessible for all Malaysian students through participation with NGOs and donations where I can.

3. Personal Development Plan (PDP)

- Volunteering with NGOs such as Teach for Malaysia and the Pintar Foundation which are focussed on improving education for Malaysian children and the younger generation.
- Learning and keeping up to date with social issues both in Malaysia and around the world along with the initiatives taken to deal with them so that I can understand the situation and learn how I can contribute.

1. Self-Reflection

Community work must be beneficiary driven. Pre-judgements on what solutions should be used must be suspended. Instead, should ask beneficiaries what they need, and this must continuously be reassessed.

Any differences that might hamper the objective should be handled effectively. While there are many ways to deal with these differences, must control knee-jerk reactions and instead try to understand the other party and negotiate in their language and terms to achieve the objective of benefitting the beneficiaries.

No solution can be achieved by one party alone. Rather the whole ecosystem must work together. The masses need to be mobilised and engaged.

Creating impact starts by having an impact driven mindset and including it at a planning stage.

Creating impact and change takes a long time and requires patience.

2.

1. Self-Reflection

I have learned the importance of dissolving our own ego in order to be an effective leader. A good leader is not one who has a monopoly on the right ideas and enforces it; rather they are aware of their privileged position and seek to empower others through their efforts. I have also learned about the limits of over-reliance on NGOs in the process of nation-building, which is symptomatic of a systemic failure to deal with issues like poor education quality and women’s rights.

2. My Pledge and Commitment

I believe I can contribute by being a part of the next generation of Malaysia’s public intellectuals, particularly in the humanities. As the Labs 8 discourse shows, Malaysia needs a new way of thinking about our own identity, and this includes critically questioning our past such as with British colonialism, and the elite-based approach to nation-building that we have simply accepted rather than critically questioned. As our nation and the world faces the challenge of achieving the SDGs and more, I pledge to take up this challenge and study a Masters in the field of Political Sociology/Philosophy after serving my bond with Yayasan Khazanah.

3. Personal Development Plan (PDP)

I hope to be able to develop my communication skills as well as my self-organisation. I have learned that communication is crucial as we are not living in a time where we can be a lone wolf and expect results. I also recognise the need to work on my organisational skills as I need to have a better way to catalogue my ideas and reflections.
