The band teacher in the video I chose uses a few different formative assessment techniques that I also employ in my own classroom. When working with the whole band she assesses students through observation as well as listening. If she notices a specific section needing work or intonation is off, she will ask that section specifically to play in order to fix what she is hearing. More individual and specific feedback occurs in sectional times when she is able to give more personalized feedback to students. She may consider adding an exit ticket which addresses one of the concepts from the lesson that day or allowing partner sharing in which peers check in on each other.

Then all the students would try and sing the song together. Another method that she could have used is to have a piano that makes animal sounds, and play along with them. This could raise interest in musical instruments.

I like how every student learns differently. What UDL will do is engage students with their strengths so they can develop their weakness. How this can be done is to let the student approach a problem from their own point a view. We, as teachers, can guide them along the way. This will give the students ownership of the problem at hand and increase their confidence.

One way I can increase engagement by utilizing UDL practices would be to allow students multiple ways to express or demonstrate their learning. In band, the obvious and most utilized mode of expression is through playing our instruments. Students may also demonstrate their learning by written communication in their music journals as well as opportunities to "teach" the class.

This instructor incorporates several different types of formative assessment. First, he is constantly asking questions of the students as the conversation flows. Second, he asks the students to ask questions and he asks them follow up questions. Third, he allows them to start giving suggestions to the performer, even going to far as to change instrumentation. Finally, he asks the students to create a music video with the artist. All of these ways are formative assessment methods. Each of them is showing what students know at the given moment. The final product, the music video, will be the summative assessment, but there is much formative assessment on the path to the final product.

Different practices may include a student being able to describe a piece of music in their own words, not how someone else has. Or assess their writing skills as opposed to their musical skills. Students can contribute to a band in ways other than musical ways.

The teacher asked many questions to the group , encouraging new ideas which led to a group discussion. The teacher listed student ideas on the board and formed smaller focus groups based on the discussion in which the students met to discuss specific ideas. Thea teacher observed the small group discussion asking questions to further new thoughts. Perhaps the teacher could have asked for an exit ticket summarizing each groups broad ideas.

Specific examples of using UDL practices in my class: When teaching key signatures I differentiate instruction by using a combination of lecture/explanation, breaking into pairs and working together, watching a colorful video which includes some animation, practice worksheets, dividing the class into teams and letting each team figure out the key on flashcards, and more. The more vary instruction the more likely it is that I will reach all learners.

It has become somewhat second nature to write every new musical terminology on the board and accompany it with a drawing. In order to engage those who are under-challenged, I typically ask them to expand the definition another student has given. If a student gave a one word answer and cannot go further, I then ask another to explain it further. I then check back with the first student to repeat, or in their own words, say what that other student said. I sometimes then have the whole class say it together to catch some who were confused.
