According to the Surplus-Energy Theory, children need to "let off steam." Running around, playing games and developing children's motor skills is extremely important in outdoor play.

Children need room to jump, run, climb, swing, yell as loud as possible, and get to explore. Outside play allows children to do this explore their creativity and get the energy out that they cannot get out in the classroom, or maybe even at home.

Playing outdoors allows children to get to explore their curiosity and ask lots of questions. In the outside playground children can learn math, science, ecology, gardening, ornithology, construction, farming, vocabulary, the seasons, the various times of the day, and all about the local weather. Playing outdoors is more effective for learning because it was concrete and they had fun while doing it, so they can connect to the information more easily.
