Within the past 5 years many countries legalized same-sex marriages, some of these countries including Switzerland (2021), Thailand and Costa Rica (2020), and Northern Ireland and Ecuador (2019). "Same Love" by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis is a song supporting same-sex marriage and is advocating for equal rights. This was the first song with this message to make it into the top 40. This is because as the textbook says on page 545, in modern societies people applaud social change, so we not only accepted, but praised this song for its progressive message.

This article covers fashion trends/fads in 2021. The textbook mentions that one way collective behavior can influence the process of social change is through fashions and fads (Macionis, p.531). While reading the article, I saw many trends that I've observed many people and celebrities wearing worldwide, like leather and oversized jackets, legging sets and plaid miniskirt suits.

Structural-Functional Perspective: Modernity as a Mass Society

A large factor of modernity as a mass society is that we're becoming a very impersonal society. An example of this is that in-person communication is being replaced by technology and social media. The textbook states on page 541 that face-to-face communication was eventually replaced by the impersonal mass media: newspapers, radio, television, and the computer-based social media that link people throughout the world. This gif demonstrates that a large majority of society is consumed by technology and in turn is growing very out of touch with each other.

Social-Conflict Perspective: Modernity as Class Society

"Class-society theory follows Marx in claiming that the increasing scale of social life in modern society has resulted from the growth and greed unleashed by capitalism" (Macionis, p.542). Martin Luther King Jr. also believed that capitalism leads to a self-centered, distant society in which its members strictly prioritize their wealth and success over all else.

Symbolic Interactionist Perspective: Modernity and the Individual

Mass-society theory suggests that being exposed to so much social diversity and change will overwhelm an individual to the point where they can't establish an identity. The textbook also states that in modern societies people, especially with a lot of wealth, have endless options of who to be and may often lose sight of who they truly are as opposed to being strictly guided by tradition. I chose to include pictures of Kylie Jenner over the years to demonstrate that living in a modern society and being wealthy can allow an individual to change from one identity to another.

In summary, the five themes that all postmodern thinking shares is that modernity failed us, the hope for progress is fading, science no longer holds the answers, cultural debates are intensifying, and social institutions are changing (Macinois, p.547). I think this tattoo encompasses all of those beliefs in one, modernity has failed us.

Two competing views, modernization theory and dependency theory were introduced on page 547 of the textbook. I agree more with the dependency theory, that rich nations achieved their wealth at the expense of poor ones and that poor societies have have little ability to modernize, even if they wanted to. I found this political cartoon to perfectly exemplify this. The cartoon shows a group of people stranded on the edge of a cliff on the brink of falling while a man wheeling a wheelbarrow full of money is walking away abandoning them.
