Climate change has emerged as one of the most pressing global challenges, pushing businesses to reconsider their ethical responsibilities. This paper explores corporate environmental responsibility, focusing on the ethical challenges posed by climate action under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 13). Using insights from two scholarly articles—Values and Multi-stakeholder Dialog for Business Transformation in Light of the UN SDGs (Sebhatu & Enquist, 2022) and Multi-stakeholder Engagement for the SDGs: Introduction to the Special Issue (Nonet et al., 2022)—we will analyze how businesses can integrate ethical practices into their sustainability strategies and the role of multi-stakeholder engagement in achieving global climate goals.

The ethical responsibility of businesses to address climate change can be explored through various theories. Utilitarianism supports minimizing harm to society by reducing environmental impact, while deontology emphasizes the moral obligation businesses have to comply with environmental laws and sustainability principles. Stakeholder theory, as discussed in both articles, argues that businesses should prioritize the interests of a wide range of stakeholders, including the environment, as they work towards achieving SDG 13.

Corporate responsibility in reducing carbon emissions is critical for achieving SDG 13. The articles both emphasize that businesses cannot work in isolation to address climate challenges; instead, they must engage in multi-stakeholder dialogue and cross-sector partnerships. This is particularly evident in Nonet et al. (2022), where cross-sector collaborations between businesses, governments, and non-profit organizations are seen as essential to overcoming climate-related obstacles. Similarly, Sebhatu & Enquist (2022) argue that businesses can integrate sustainability into their operations through values-driven transformations, ensuring that they meet both ethical responsibilities and global climate targets.

In conclusion, corporate responsibility for climate action is not only a legal requirement but also an ethical imperative. By adopting values-driven models and engaging in multi-stakeholder partnerships, businesses can play a significant role in achieving SDG 13. Through the application of ethical theories such as utilitarianism, deontology, and stakeholder theory, it becomes clear that companies must consider the broader societal and environmental impacts of their actions. As both articles suggest, addressing climate change requires collective effort and the integration of sustainability into every aspect of business operations, ensuring a positive impact on future generations.
