Enfrentó a los partidarios de Carlos Mª Isidro contra los partidarios de Isabel II a la sucesión del trono español.

La guerra estuvo dividida en dos bandos:

- Carlistas: Reconocían a Carlos María de Isidro, hermano de Fernando VII, como legítimo rey de España. Se agrupaban bajo el lema Dios, Patria y Rey, y defendían el mantenimiento de los fueros junto a una fuerte oposición al liberalismo. Tenían el apoyo de la iglesia, la nobleza y parte de la pequeña nobleza agraria.

- Isabelinos: Reconocían a Isabel II, hija de Fernando VII, como legítima reina de España. Se agrupaban bajo el lema Más vale morir que esclavos vivir, y defendían el liberalismo de la nación. Tenían el apoyo de la burguesía y el pueblo de las ciudades.

El conflicto se decantó hacia los progresistas, con el general Espartero como líder.
