As educators, it is our job to encourage early literacy as much as possible. We must first set up a strong foundation before formal reading can start. The most influential way to encourage early literacy in the classroom is to read to children daily. Teacher should pause in-between readings to ask open ended questions. Open ended questions encourage language and vocabulary development. Children should have a reading center located in their classroom. Children should be able to read books at the center throughout the day. We want to encourage children to have a love for reading. This will allow them to become excellent formal readers in the future.

Before formal reading can begin, it is important children develop a love for reading. Having a reading center in the classroom allows children to explore and read books. It is our job as educators to encourage reading as much as possible. It is extremely important we encourage reading during the early years of a child life.

Retelling Activity: I would ask children, what different places and things they pass on a trip through their community. I would ask children to draw all the things they see and smell while traveling through their community. I will also ask students what form of transportation they used to travel.

All early childhood settings and environments should have print awareness. When children are in an environment that encourages children to read, they are more likely to become fluent readers at an older age.
