Hi everybody!

I'm Gaia, from Italy. I teach English and ICT in a primary school near Milan. This is my 17th year as a teacher. I like teaching to young learners because they're interested, motivated and enthusiastic. They really like to learn new things!

As I read from may of you, I use many different activities and materials in my classroom: flashcards and wordcards, arts & crafts, lapbooks, storytelling, songs, mime, role playing, ball games, bingo, card games, board games... My classes are very different from each other: younger learners usually like singing, acting and playing, while in higher classes pupils like drawing, making arts & crafts, reading books. I have a small library with a series of ladybird books and sometimes I let my pupils take them on loan, just to try to read in English autonomously.

My lessons usually start with an ice breaker like a song or a class game; then we use visuals for drills (games with flashcards, pictures and posters); the main part of the lesson is a listening or reading text, followed by some related exercises (read and match, read and number, listen and circle, listen and put a tick...), to end with a drawing or a small color-cutting activity and a final short song.

CHALLENGES IN TEFL TO YL

I love teaching to YL! They're motivated, interested and ethusiastic! They don't care about making mistakes, and are always ready to learn new things. So one of the main challenge to afford as a teacher is to offer different activities to grab and get their attention. As they are easy to motivate, they often loose attention if the activity is boring, not suited for their age or badly planned.
According to the different needs and to the multiple kinds of intelligence present in the class, I always provide different materials and try to make my lessons dynamic, sequencing the time in activities and modifying the classroom setting.

I like reading and tell stories to my kids! My favourite is "The gingerbread man", that I often read during Christmas period. Usually I read the story showing the pictures to the kids and animating a puppet; at the end of each page we repeat together some words or a short song. In a second moment, I read the story again while children animate the puppets them selves; finally, we try to repeat the story using laminated pictures. To involve children more, I give them some wordcards: when I read the story the second time, they have to raise their wordcard if they hear the word. It's very fun! And they learn to discriminate words and memorize them more easily.
After the story, I prepare activities like re-ordering pictures, finger puppets to colour and cut, drawings for a poster.

I like board games! I find them useful to practice and improve skills and content knowledge. In TESL they're useful to enrich vocabulary and grammar structures; to promote social abilities like collaboration, sharing games, respect. Games are also a good strategy to make learning fun and reduce anxiety in weaker students.

As a primary school teacher, I often use action songs as a useful and (why not?) fun mean of learning...and even as an ice-breaker, a warm up activity, or a end-of-lesson jingle. I use action songs both in English and Italian: they're exceptional to practice pronunciation, improve concentration and attention skills, develop coordination and self-control. Through the associazione of meaningful movements (like gestures, mimes or animal actions) , with release menu world, children reinforce learning and retention of contents and concepts.
https://moodle4teachers.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=22769#p64022
