The story of Easter is one that is centered around the revival of Jesus, yet before he was able to do this his goal was to cleanse the sins of humanity. They remark on time and ageing, until Tom Junior arrives with a driver for Princess. She asks Chance to go with her, he refuses, and she leaves. Tom Junior and his henchmen return and confront Chance, he emphasises that the common enemy of humanity is time.
2. The extract is at the very end of the play. Just beforehand was the chaotic rally in the cocktail lounge, and a heart-to-heart between Princess and Chance, where they talked about faded movie stars and ageing. Princess heard the news about her film, and found a new wave of self-confidence. After the closing curtain, there is the implied castration of Chance, and a failed movie for Princess.
3. If the extract was not in the play, the audience would never see a lighter and more likeable side to Chance. His character undergos self-recognition, and we see that underneath the bravado, he is insecure and scared of his future. This is very different from the ending we learnt from the original play. Now you have this knowledge, try to swap them around, if the original play had a wholesome ending and we take it away. Would you be satisfied? However it would then be a cliche like any other stories with a good ending and we would probably forget and leave no space for imagination. Now back to the purpose of the extract, we would be quite certain that the castration is inevitable but it's not really canon.
