This court case disputed equal education for all, which allowed everyone, no matter their color, to attend school and receive an education. This was a monumental case that forever changed the world we live in. Although I teach in 3rd grade I make my student very aware of several cultures. In our global competency morning meetings we often discuss different cultures or traditions we have. This not only makes me aware of where they come from but always others to see how different we are. Especially, in my classroom I have a couple ESL students so really understanding their backgrounds so I can educate them to the best of my ability without them feeling apart from anyone else is extremely important.

Over the years, technology has advanced tremendously and in more ways than we could have imagined. This has been a very useful tool within in classrooms when teaching content. This allows students to learn in so many different ways and as teachers we are to use that to our advantage. Back then, students were expected to learn mainly through paper and pencil which works well for some students but not all. I am able to use applications such as google classroom to post material, kahoot, prodigy and even I-Ready which we use everyday in my classroom!

No Child Left Behind Act

This act was aimed for teachers and schools to take accountability for those students who were underperforming. Hence the reason we have standardized tests in order to get accurate data on our students and if they are performing on grade level. I do think that this reflects the teacher to a certain extent however, we do have those students that do rush through the test or guess because of how "intimidating" the test may be. Since being in education I have discovered how hard it is to get some students onto grade level especially when they came in well below what they were expected to. This requires additional small group instruction to find the rot of the issue and what they are struggling with. I have found that students often struggle with the stamina piece to get through the entire test. With now prepping for our EOG we often give longer passages or more questions so they are better prepared for it.

IEP/504 Plan

IEP's and 504 Plans allowed those struggling students to be more successful within the classroom. This allows students to receive accommodations that will better help within the classroom specifically with tests and assignments. These accommodations can include: separate testing, extended time, etc. It is important for the teacher to be aware of this so they can best help the student. I often think of this as teamwork and constant communication. As a teacher, I hate to see my students struggle so I always try my best to do whatever it takes for that student to be successful even if it coming up with different assignments so I can see them grow!

Curriculum / State Standards

These are standards that are given to us by the county andd state that we are expected to teach. My county gives us what standards need to be met during each "phase". They give us the tools on how to teach the material but not the material itself. This allows for creativity by the teacher and how he/she would like to teach it. I often find myself doing a variety of different things whether that is on the computer, hands on activities with manipulatives or paper / pencil worksheets. This allows us to better reach our students and what works best with their learning styles. My county does several check ins so we are able to see how well we are students are understanding the curriculum and what needs to be retested before the EOG. As a first year teacher, I find this to be extremely helpful and it i interesting to see how different counties or even states have different standards and when certain things are taught.
