Attitude Toward Reading

I love reading all kinds of books and all genres. Writing style is what makes or breaks a text for me, even more so then the plot. I read for pleasure and for education (I try to rotate). I never feel like I have as much time as I'd like to spend reading, but I always try to finish a book for fun every break from school and every vacation. During school I feel guilty if I read a book for fun when I have so much assigned reading that I am avoiding.

Why I Love Reading

I was a very slow reader in elementary school and never got above my own reading level with AR. But some how I still fell in love with reading. I liked it much more though when I am reading for fun and not for points or assignments. I love to experience things that I couldn't do through books (adventure and fantasy). But, in high school especially when teachers started having us recognize literary techniques and analyse meaning and purpose in texts, I found another type of love for reading, a deeper appreciation for what they say about culture, history, and philosophical thoughts of time. But trust me I still love pop culture books even if there is not a lot of depth.

The first book I loved was Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. I went on the read most of what Gary Paulsen has written. The protagonist was a young man who surprised everyone by overcoming life in the wilderness alone as a child. I liked to problem solve and imagine what I would do if I was in those circumstances. I wanted the adults in my life to be impressed by how capable I was.

The first book series I cried over, not because the ending was sad, but because it was over and there was nothing left to read was The Chronicles of Narnia. Because I was such a slow reader my mom actually let me rent the audio versions of the book from the library. I was supposed to be reading along, but mostly I just listened to them the first time through.

Great Teachers

I have had a string of great Reading and English teachers who helped me foster a love for reading. Mr. Moore in fourth grade read Bud Not Buddy aloud to the class. Then all through Middle school and High school my teachers where just passionate about reading and enjoying books. Mrs. Lauphenberg in 11th grade had us read books from many different cultures and told us they might be hard to read because they where so different from what we are used to but to still find something we appreciate about them. The books where The Good Earth, A Thousand Cranes, Chronicles of a Death Foretold, Anton Chekhov Short Stories, and Like Water for Chocolate. Senior Year we read absurd theatre from Rosencrantz and Guildenstren are Dead to Waiting for Godot. I love all those books because I loved experiencing new things. I also grew to love them because the teachers loved them. I could talk endlessly still about those books and the impacts they had on my life.

There is no book I wouldn't start reading to see if I liked it. All my positive experiences with reading gives me confidence that there is nothing to dense or hard to read. I have had lots of experience summarizing and picking out key concepts, which helps me a lot when reading textbooks or articles for class. It is an easy topic to bring up in conversation and I enjoy hearing others thoughts on things I have read and things they have enjoyed reading. My husband is also an avid reader and we enjoy connecting over books we read. The background picture is actually are wedding center pieces because we wanted that love of reading to be represented in our special day. Our book shelves are full and diverse and we wouldn't have it any other way!
