Montag says, “It was a pleasure to burn”. The government mandated that all books should be burn so that’s what the firemen are doing. Montag met Clarisse McClellan, she’s his new neighbor. Guy starts to ask himself whether he is happy or not.

Clarisse questions Montag about his happiness and his occupation. We understand that Montag never knew that a fireman is supposed to stop fire and not to burn books. He also didn’t know that people could talk to one another. Clarisse is trying to help Montag to discover the real happiness he has been missing in his life. After that, Montag returned to his home to find his wife. Her name is Mildred Montag. She was unconscious, she was lying on the bed, overdosed on sleeping pills. She got saved by impersonal technicians, who bring machines to pump her stomach and make a transfusion. We don’t really know if she attempted suicide. After her overdose, Montag realize that he doesn’t really know much about his wife. He can’t even remember the moment he first met her. He realizes that his life with her is meaningless and purposeless. There is no love between each other. After a couple of days of seeing Clarisse and working at the firehouse, Guy Montag realize that he must change his life.
