Although shingles can occur anywhere on your body, it most often appears as a single stripe of blisters that wraps around either the left or the right side of your torso.
Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus — the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you've had chickenpox, the virus lies inactive in nerve tissue near your spinal cord and brain. Years later, the virus may reactivate as shingles.

While it isn't a life-threatening condition, shingles can be very painful. Vaccines can help reduce the risk of shingles, while early treatment can help shorten a shingles infection and lessen the chance of complications.

  • Sensitivity to touch
  • A red rash that begins a few days after the pain
  • Fluid-filled blisters that break open and crust over
  • Itching
Other symptoms may include:
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Fatigue
 The pain can be intense and for some people the pain is the first symptom before they develop a rash.

However, the risk of shingles increases as you get older.
Some people have a greater risk of getting shingles. This includes people who:
  • have medical conditions that keep their immune systems from working properly, such as certain cancers like leukemia and lymphoma, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and
  • receive immunosuppressive drugs, such as steroids and drugs that are given after organ transplantation.
Most people who develop shingles have only one episode during their lifetime. However, a person can have a second or even a third episode.

Analgesics (pain medicine) may help relieve the pain caused by shingles. Wet compresses, calamine lotion, and colloidal oatmeal baths may help relieve some of the itching.
Also Lyrica and Neurontin, and or Gabapentin can be prescribed to help with the nerve pain.
