One very important environmentalist is Aldo Leopold. Aldo was born in Burlington, Iowa in 1887 and he died in 1948. He lived in Burlington and Madison. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service (1909-28), mainly in the Southwest. Aldo was an American author, philosopher, scientist, ecologist, forester, conservation, and environmentalist. Aldo's most important achievement was that he authored "A Sand County Almanac", his observation of nature. This book appeared post humorously in 1949. Through it, he openly criticized the harm done to natural systems by humans. Aldo Leopold once said we abuse land because we regard it as a community to which we belong we may begin to use it with love and respect.

Olaus Murie

By Ronnie

Olaus Murie once said "There is growing awareness of the beauty of country ... a sincere desire to keep some of it for all time. People are beginning to value highly the fact that a river runs unimpeded for a distance... They are beginning to obtain deep satisfaction from the fact that a herd of elk may be observed in back country, on ancestral ranges, where the Indians once hunted them. They are beginning to seek the healing relaxation that is possible in wild country. In short, they want it."

Olaus Murie was a renowned biologist and one of the country's great champions of wildlife and wilderness. Scientist, visionary, and former governing council member and president of The Wilderness Society, Olaus Murie's vision helped establish the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska and shaped a new way of thinking about predators and ecosystems.

Olaus Murie began his career as a wildlife biologist in Alaska, where he studied caribou herds in northern Alaska's Brooks Range and found his lifetime companion, Mardy. The Muries moved to Jackson Hole, Wyoming to study the local elk herd and it became their lifelong home. Olaus became an early, staunch defender of predators and their crucial role in ecosystems.

In 1937, Murie joined the governing council of the young Wilderness Society. He helped convince President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to add surrounding rain forests to Olympic National Monument. He also worked to establish Jackson Hole National Monument in the valley below the Teton Range.

In 1950, The Wilderness Society named Murie its president. The Muries log cabin in Moose, Wyoming became an unofficial Wilderness Society headquarters. As president, Murie lobbied successfully to prevent large federal dam projects within Glacier National Park and Dinosaur National Monument.

Murie's greatest quest became protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in northeast Alaska. In 1956, Mardy, Olaus, and a few others spent several weeks on an Arctic expedition. Armed with their evidence, they returned to the lower 48 and spent four years campaigning tirelessly to protect the place so dear to them. In 1960, President Eisenhower set aside 8 million acres as the Arctic National Wildlife Range, which later became part of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Wangari was the founder of something called the Green Belt Movement. The Green Belt Movement is an environmental organization that empowers communities, particularly women, to conserve the environment and improve livelihoods. Wangari Maathia did many things in her
life like, she got a degree in Biological Sciences, she got a masters degree of Science, she pursued doctoral studies, and she also taught veterinary anatomy. Also, she was the first women in East Central Africa to earn a doctorate degree. And in my opinion her quotes are very inspirational, for example "We cannot tire or give up. We owe it to the present and future generations of all species to rise up and walk!" In conclusion, Wangari Maathia was many amazing things and that is why I chose her for my environmentalist.

Robert Marshall was a person who attempted to change this world for the better. He made it his mission to see the beauty in earth and help it to improve. Born on January 2nd in New York city Marshall was very educated in the city but spent his summers in his family's summer home in the Adirondack Mountains where he eventually climbed all 46 Adirondack Mountains which were over 4000 feet each! This is when he realized his love for nature was incredibly strong and he wished to pursue it. Perhaps Marshall's biggest accomplishment was when he was the first to suggest that large tracts of Alaska were to be preserved he was thrilled by the thought of exploring land that was never once seen by humans he was the first to explore much of the range. In 1929 he took the first of many trips he would be on to the remote town of Wiseman, Alaska where his love of Alaska itself began! He hated when miners and exotic species would invade the land and harm the environment. He once wrote, "Remaining vigilant against these threats is critical. For our country's long-term interests we should be recommending the expansion of wilderness." This proves that he cared so much for nature.

One superlatively special day, January 13, 1919, in Arlington, Washington, a girl named Celia Hunter came into this world. Hunter was a very far-reaching environmentalist, but not as many people recognize her like John Muir, Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt, or Rachel Carson, but she's still well-known. Hunter lived in a small farm during the Great Depression. When she grew up, she became a pilot for the US Air Force, but later decided that she wanted to be a botanist, a person who studies the biology of plants. Hunter was very successful. She got the highest award of all time in the Sierra Club! But one sad day, December 1, 2001, Hunter died... We remember her famous quote, "Keep a fire in your belly," which means "Be confident."
