This isn't really about food but the idea of determining the life of another (belief that we have control over those -livestock or children under our care?). I came across a post about abortion and thought it was quite similar to the situation in the movie. The children took two sides: to let the 3rd graders take care of the pig or to send the pig. These sides were similar to the two standings on abortion: pro-life and pro-choice respectively.

Just to be clear, I am comparing their circumstance to that of a woman who has to decide between a late-term abortion and birthing an infant that she cannot be there for i.e. not enough resources to care for them or she has little time left in the world.

The children that wanted to let the 3rd graders take care of P-chan wanted to let her (him?) live longer, even for just a bit, despite the fact that they could not be responsible for her. (There is a lot of discussion on the definition of responsibility but I'll just simplify it to mean rear her and take culpability for any burden or injury that P-chan causes while she is alive. ... That's still quite long haha) They see abandoning P-chan as inhumane, as if they are killing their own friend-- child in this case. They feel that P-chan had the potential to live her life fully in the hands of others.

The children that wanted to send P-chan to the meat farm (butcher?) were.. I wouldn't exactly say pro-choice but they were practical and thinking about the well-being of the pig/ child and caretaker(s) in the future. The issue that made the difference between my comparisons is that P-chan was raised to be eaten while babies are not. The children have allowed her to live in a life of luxury, much more comfortable and happier than her less fortunate counterparts.

I guess in general, this reveals the values of the children towards life but not food as they realise that their discussion is about determining the life span of another (who has the right? why should they have this right?) and the meaning of life. Needless to say, I really enjoyed the premise and approach of the film :D

<del>Wait, one last thing. This entire film went on with the pig oblivious to the predicament the children were having. P-chan did not have a say in their decisions, much like how an infant can't tell their mother that they want to live.</del>
I'll just stop here ahaha

Whether a certain animal is considered acceptable to eat or not depends mostly on the connection they form with humans. Many people are closely attached to domestic animals such as dogs are cats, hence making it socially unacceptable to eat them. In the case of the pig, even though many people eat it, the students still faced a dilemma as they had become very attached to that specific pig.
