During the short film, a boy tells of an alien story that causes everyone to turn on each other and falsely accuse on another. For instance, they think one guy is an alien when really he just has insomnia. So, no one will be in close proximity to him.Each time the accused person changes, everyone on the street will isolate them out, keep their distance, and make them feel estranged.

Dehumanizing someone makes it easier for us to hurt them, since we see them as different than us and therefore not sharing our pain sensations or sadness. This is evidenced in "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street" when Charlie shoots the man with the hammer returning from a neighboring hood and kills him, before giving him the chance to step into the light or get close enough to explain who he is. He sees him as an ominous shadow rather than a person, and therefore doesn't hesitate to kill him in the same way he may have hesitated if he knew his identity.
