Seoul is the capital and largest city in South Korea and considered a megacity because it has a population of over ten million people, with nearly half of its 10 million people going in the National Capital Area.
The Seoul National Capital Area is the second largest in the world at 233.7 square miles and an average elevation of just above sea level at 282 feet; because of its very large population, Seoul is considered a global city and it is the center of South Korea's economy, culture and politics. As one of the most densely packed cities in the world, Seoul does not have much room for growth. In fact, Seoul's population has been declined for a few years as childbirth rates remain very low.

In 1960, people were flooding to the capital for employment, packing the city and sending real estate prices through the roof for the Korea war just ended. But Seoul's population started its decline in 2011, dropping 0.11% in just one quarter. According to the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs, the city's number of single people keeps growing as young married couples move for cheaper housing.

Korean leaders have turned a watchful eye to environmental sustainability. The plan has as three main strategies on environment, society and culture, and economy. Notable goals include limiting reliance on nuclear power, addressing energy consumption in the building sector, and increasing female economic activity and decision-making.
Large projects for Sustainability that have been accomplished would be the removal of an elevated highway that is now restored by a stream that goes through the heart of the city, a riverfront park development, investments in transit, and a massive transition to electric-powered buses.
The leaders of Korea are now thinking about how their evaluation model can meet reporting requirements for the Urban Sustainability Development Goal.

In 1960, the war just ended so that's why the population was a bit low at that stage, but the numbers started multiplying every ten years aft er to help rebuilt the broken city. Workers jobs that were set destroyed by the war, were all forced to help rebuild the city causing the population to rise dramatically. After around 1970, the population kept on growing for there was a rise of new opportunities in the New city Seoul. The population kept on growing until 1990 where they noticed there was too many people in Seoul, so loving couples started getting fewer children.
