Sustainable development is development that does not compromise future generation’s possibilities to enjoy clean environment, different cultures and steady economics.

In my opinion sustainable development is the concern about our planet based on environmental, cultural, economic and political challenges.

Most critical challenges are in the environmental/ecological domain. It shows us that we need to aware of global scale of uncertainty causing by climate change, decreasing biodiversity, water scarcity, increasing human poverty, overﬁshing, and deforestation and so on.

How we can reverse the unsustainable global development trends is in everyone’s hands and it requires wise decision-making considering all the aspects for sustainable world.

I understand sustainable development in its ecological context. It means development that helps to save this planet to the future generations. It refers to different means and strategies that support ecological sustainability, for example turning out the lights when you leave a room.

In my thinking the term sustainable development is
strongly rooted in the equality between current and future generations: each generation has the
responsibility to make sure that it will not destroy or jeopardize the
possibilities for good life of future generations. Another aspect in
sustainable development is the gap of the standard of living between the
industrial and developing countries: what does it take to have sustainable
standard of living for us all?

Sustainable development means for me a very important attitude, awareness and human actions of today that are influencing the circumstances of next generations. It means personal responsibility of own actions and willingness to take care of something we own together. And all these from social, environmental, cultural and economic point of views.

To me sustainable development means something that I'm learning together with my children. Their kindergardner is a part of the Green Flag -program (http://www.vihrealippu.fi/vl). I think that it's important to teach the children about the nature and how the resources can be saved. This can be taught even with very young children.
