He hitchhiked around the state for some time before beginning his career working with the United States Forest Service in Juneau. Afterward, he moved to the U.S. National Park Service in Sitka, where he eventually settled. A while later, Richard Forst joined the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as a law enforcement officer. It was during his service with NOAA that he was involved in the seizure of the Arctic Wind, an illegal fishing vessel discovered in the Bering Sea.

In 1989, Richard Forst was deployed to assist with the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Working out of Kodiak, Alaska, he ate at a new Subway restaurant and, seeing the potential in the business, decided to become a franchisee. In 1991, Richard Forst opened his first Subway franchise and has been self-employed ever since. He later built and opened three others. His stores have received recognition for having the highest opening week sales globally.

A multi-faceted individual, Richard Forst is also a pilot, boat captain, firefighter, and specialty rescue diver. More recently, he has been honing his expertise as a master builder. He specializes in building high-end lodges and cabins in remote landscapes in Alaska, and was featured in DIY Network’s 2015 season of “Building Alaska.” He also owns several vacation rental properties. In his free time, Richard Forst enjoys running, biking, and competing in triathlons.
