By using tone and a harsh diction Tobias Smollett illustrates the societal norms dictated in the times that the two men live in and the frequent outburst of intense emotion between the two formal characters.

Through the increased narrative pace and intense tone shift, Somlett conveys the diffucity in keeping emotions separate from ration argument, otherwise it will yield socially unacceptable results.

As Gauntlet and Pickle quarrel, they verbally attack each other, exposing each of defensiveness while the social norms limit their diction.
