Through heated dialogue and the narrative of a formal, ritualistic outlet from disagreement, Smollet is able to reveal the oppressive but necessary nature of social rituals, demonstrating their ability to convey deep emotions in a controlled, acceptable form.

The spectrum of social acceptability has inevitably shifted over the course of human civilization, but at the crux of these practices is the noble attempt to keep civilization from devolving into a primitive and destructive "state of nature." As Pickle and Godfrey battle for victory, it is evident that neither are willing to sacrifice their standings in society. Through an artful medley of sharp dialogue in the midst of a then-acceptable social norm, Smollet illustrates the power these practices hold in even in the tensest of encounters.

In his excerpt from ‘The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle’ Smollett utilizes shifts in dialogue and narrative pace to show how two of the characters, Mr. Pickle and Godfrey, attempt to strike that balance.

Through the increased narrative pace and intense tone shift, Somlett conveys the diffucity in keeping emotions separate from ration argument, otherwise it will yield socially unacceptable results.

As Gauntlet and Pickle quarrel, they verbally attack each other, exposing each of defensiveness while the social norms limit their diction.

Although wrapped up in an argument intertwined with anger, social propriety limits their ability to attack each other with harm, as it is uncivil.
