Parents' Responsibilities in Educating their Children to Use Social Media Responsibly

Parents have a significant responsibility in teaching their children how to use social media responsibly. They should promote its proper usage and act as role models for their children. Parents should limit their children's screen time, encourage them to spend time without screens, and teach them to value and appreciate the beauty of the real world.

My parents always remind me to have a limit on the use of social media, because they say that the time that I spend on social media should be spent on my studies. They also get mad at me anytime I sleep late at night because I use my smartphone excessively for things like browsing or playing mobile games, especially when they ask for help in the household chores and I do not do them immediately because I am busy using my phone.

My parents usually tell me to "think before you click" when it comes to the stuff I put online. They frequently stress that a single post can cause your excellent reputation to collapse. They constantly emphasize how essential it is to use social media to spread inspiration and positivity, particularly at this period where the world is full of negativity. That's why I previously worked on a personal project which is a social media page where I shared uplifting and informative content to inspire and motivate my followers.

Social Media's Impact on Human Interaction

Human interaction has been changed and influenced by social media. It altered the way individuals interact and form bonds. Despite the fact that social media has improved people's lives by making it possible to communicate with others quickly online, in some way it affected the nature of how individuals relate to one another. Nowadays, people find it impossible to live without their phones. People in this generation, particularly teens, never want to miss out on the latest trends and updates. This is why this generation came up with the acronym "FOMO", or the "fear of missing out". Overusing social media can be detrimental. Your mental health will be affected as a result of being distracted, having your sleep disrupted, being exposed to inappropriate information, and rumor spreading.

Social media is separating us from life in some way. Some couples spend more time on their phones than with one other. Some parents fail to engage and bond with their kids, so instead of engaging in play, they offer them devices at a very young age to keep them entertained and distracted. Sometimes while dining out with my family, we let our food get cold so we could click those perfect images and post them online. Instead of talking to each other about how each other's days went, they go through their phones and scroll, browse, completely ignoring each other as if we are not on the same table. Teenagers are more connected online than they are with their parents. Somehow, social media is separating us from our loved ones, and it weakens our relationships. Because we spend so much time on our phones, social media is lowering our quality of life.

How Online Technology is Shaping the Way We Interact

Humans are naturally social people. We tend to spend time and mingle with one another. However, the rise of online technology, particularly social media, created changes in how people deal with others. Some individuals would rather stay home and have fun online than wander outdoors of the actual world. I for one, sometimes prefer to spend time alone and engage myself in online activities rather than going out and spending time with other people. Online technology increased isolation and decreased human-to-human interaction. Because they spend so much time online, some children are not really socialized or know how to interact with people.

Overuse of online technology decreases social skills and interaction. Some people lose their social skills as a result of using social media excessively. They do not interact with the real world because they are solely exposed to the digital environment. Based on my own experience, there are times in my life when I simply prefer to be by myself. When I'm alone, all I want is to be on social media for hours, watching videos, reading posts, and scrolling endlessly until I get bored. Although it can be boring at times, but for me social media can also be a form of escape. An escape from the boring and unpleasant aspects of life.

The Changes Caused by Social Media

Social media is transforming how people interact. It now plays a significant role on how society behaves. This is due to the completely different environment offered by social media compared to the real world. It offers anonymity allowing people to become their more authentic self. Some research also say that an individual's online persona is the "core self". Social media caused a lot of changes. These changes are evident even to us.

Social media has changed me in a way that I can express my feelings better by posting online. As time goes by and social media continues to develop, I am more obsessed with it and can no longer spend time with my family and friends because I prefer to be alone and have fun online. Remember what I said about how social media is dividing us? Based from personal experience it really is true in some way. I could still remember when my cousin and I just reunited, and I am so excited to tell her all my crazy stories. As I tell her what had happened to me in the past couple months, I noticed that she was not listening and was just browsing on her phone, chatting with her friends and completely not paying attention to what I was saying, which made my mood change.

I also experienced how the overuse of social media can be detrimental to one's social skills. There are times when I would just be on social media for hours without noticing the passage of time. Sometimes I would indulge in this kind of habit for days continuously. But in doing so, what I've realized is that if I have to interact and mingle with others in a social setting, I seem to feel awkward and uncomfortable around people. I feel as as if I have lost the ability to converse and behave naturally around people. It may sound weird, but I can attest to it from experience. It is true that social media is making me less social in some sense.
