Exploration Option 1 - 5 Issues According to a Current School Administrator

I had the privilege of speaking with Toby Miller, the current Superintendent of a K-12 campus. He openly shared some of the issues he felt school administrators have and will continue to face.

#1: Some of the glaring issues currently are the changes coming to Special Education. Those issues are centered around things such as the present of cameras in special education rooms, also the possible move of Dyslexia from 504 services to SPED.
#2: School safety continues to be at the forefront of local, state, and national legal issues. It is important that we continue to find ways to make our schools safer for our students.
#3: Anti-bullying movements have also become "hot button" issues. Bullying isn't something new, but with the addition of technology, i.e. social media the bullying of a student can be made more public, instantly. It is important that school administrators are knowledgable not naive when it comes to technology and the negative uses it can have on students.
#4: Inappropriate relationships between educators and students continues to be a reoccurring issue. The frequency of this issue occurring, caused the state to require more trainings for educators on this very topic.
#5: The issues surrounding gun violence and whether educators or school staff should be allowed to conceal carry weapons on school campuses, have individuals on both sides arguing their reasoning.

(T. Miller, personal communication, August 23, 2018)

The Debate, Explained, discusses an issue which every current and future school administrator must approach with sensitivity and a great understanding of each groups' questions and concerns. In this particular article, the authors share the concerns of those that oppose and those that are for allowing educators to arm themselves, while at school (Blad, Superville, Ujifusa, Will, and Cardoza, 2018).

https://www.edweek.org/ew/issues/arming-teachers.html

While conducting my research on the number of the issues I was presented with during my explorations. I chose to focus my research on the topic of Special Education, because of a personal connection within the realm of special education. The current and future issues shared by Mr. Miller and the vast amount of information on the topic, I felt it could provide me some new insights and help clear up some misconceptions or misunderstandings I may have.

The small amount of research I conducted supported the assumptions, concerns, and questions my family and I have faced over the last 7 years. The research provided some details about Texas that were disheartening. The extend to which students have been underserved within special education and the number of students under-identified, was some eye-opening information. The research provided great insights into an "unkept" system.

I believe the knowledge I have received from my research will cause me as a future administrator to be more intentional. I will be intentional when it comes to ensuring that ALL my students have the tools they need to be successful. Knowing what I know now, I believe will make me a better advocate for my students who may have a disability.
