1. BISMARCK A CATALYST FOR GERMANY, OVERCOMES POLITICAL AND RELIGIOUS OBSTACLES
2. In 1871, Bismarck used previous democratic and socialist opinions to gain the popular backing that he needed to push his agenda. He enacted measures to strengthen the German Empire, such as attempting to weaken the Catholic Church; however, Pope Pius IX wrote a Syllabus of Errors that denounced Bismarck and urged Catholics to not support him. Bismarck retaliated by launching Kulturkampf, a movement that expelled the Church from key facets of German life, such as education and worship.
3. Otto von Bismarck:

William II becomes the last German kaiser, but there were disagreements between him and Bismark. William II did not favor Bismark's anti-socialist laws in foreign affairs. However, William II forces Bismark to resign. Under the reign of William II, German set on a "New Course," which catered to the laboring class and more aggressive foreign policies. One group gaining popularity during William II's reign was the Social Democrats, however they lacked proper representation, which lead to rising tensions.

This period was one of reasonable and orderly government. At this time, suffrage was extended to 3/4th of the male population. There were two major parties, the Liberals (who were more willing to reform) and the Conservatives ( who were looking to promote labor legislation, mainly by extending existing acts).

Having been annexed to Britain since 1801, the Irish peasants were oppressed by the landlords and were forced to pay tithes to the Church of Ireland. While the Irish pushed for establishing a parliament separate from the British one, the Protestants (or Ulster Unionists) in northern Ireland objected to be included in an autonomous Ireland. Eventually, the Catholics in southern Ireland became an independent Republic of Ireland in 1922, whereas Northern Ireland remained a part of Great Britain

The labour movement forced the Liberal Party to shift away from typical lazes-faire economics, and shift towards policies that benefited workers. For example, sickness, accident, old-age , and unemployment insurance represented some of the measures that led to the creation of a safety-net for the British people. Liberals like Herbert Asquith, the prime minister, and David Lloyd George, the chancellor of exchequer, began to favor government intervention and more progressive policies.

Herbert Asquith:
