The accounts written by the world's greatest generation have enthralled me for years, and selecting an inspirational war story would have been a nice fit for me. However, as I was coming my bookshelves, I rediscovered a classic work. I faintly remembered reading it years ago, back in middle school, but the details evaded me. However, I knew it was the most inspirational piece I had ever read. The Last Lecture, by Randy Pausch, proved itself to be a treasure trove of rhetorical devices, and I highly recommend it. I believed this quote was important because it laid the foundation for the story's motif, that achieving your childhood dreams and living your life is important. I found this quote to be humorous and I believe it was a great way to describe a man the attendees had never known. With this little jab at his old coach, Pausch engages the crowd and is able to deliver the message related to this aspect of his life. At this point in the story, Randy is pulled over for speeding. When confronted by the officer, he explains his predicament, how he has a few months of life left. While talking, he displays his scars from the tumor surgeries to the skeptical man. I found his reaction to being let off ironic. Pausch compares his eleven tumors to a beautiful women. It's interesting to see this perspective on the instruments of his demise. I chose this quote for a number of reasons. The first is that I believed this was an excellent example of parallelism. It is the third time throughout the book in which the head fake was mentioned. This doubles as an insight into Randy Pausch's life, alluding to the way he educates students. The second reason I chose this quote is because I actually participated in Alice in middle school, which I thought was wild. Throughout the book, the theme of touching the lives of others is ever present, but I know it's true. While reading the final third of the story, this opening line for the fifty-sixth chapter stuck out to me. The first component of this excerpt that caught my eye was the simile used to describe the necessity of fun. Even under the shadow of death, Pausch understood the necessity of sucking the marrow out of life. So much so that, in his final lesson, he stressed the underlying importance of enjoying life. Just like the theme of fundamentals, this idea appears throughout the book. This quote is an excellent example of one of the story's many themes. I believe this quote is a great example of Pausch's underlying theme of enjoying life and having fun as well as his use of figurative language to describe his ideas. Throughout the final third of the novel, the author continues to stress the importance of enjoying the time allotted on this Earth. Time and again this motif reappears each chapter, an it only seems fair to point it out. In addition, it is a great example of how Pausch continues to use figurative language to describe a situation. For instance, the author uses this line to describe how he works as a teacher and consults as a Disney Imagineer simultaneously. He was able to keep a foot in each world, thus reaping the benefits of each job. This only enhances Pausch's ability to enjoy his life.
