Emerson was a close friend of two other influential transcendentalists, Margaret Fuller and Henry Thoreau. Emerson lived from 1803 to 1882, and was the most significant force and leader of the transcendentalism movement.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1832 - traveled to Europe, where he gained his knowledge and inspiration for the transcendentalist ideology.&nbsp;<br>1833 - returned home, began lecturing on topics of spiritual existence and ethical living, which introduced the views to the public. <br>1836 - released the essay, "Nature," which embodied/ publicly introduced his newly developed philosophy.&nbsp;<br>1837 - released the piece of writing, "The American Scholar," which encouraged American authors to create original unique ideas instead of imitating predecessors, directly beginning to advance his trancendentalist views.&nbsp;<br>1860 - began to demonstrate a more moderate balance of ideas. Published "The Conduct of Life" and advocated for the abolition of slavery (a main objective of the movement)</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The transcendentalists failed to effect the entire nation, only reaching few New England elites. Although the movement did not the accomplish its specific goals, it brought up a completely new way of thinking that inspired a new spirit of American reform.&nbsp;Transcendentalist thinking was an even an advocate for the eventual abolition of slavery.&nbsp; Since its origin, this way of thinking has been applied by many modern thinkers seeking reform, including MLK, Malcolm X, and Ghandi.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>
