(Cite your sources) By: Gabrielle Collins When you look up the definition of an epic hero, dictionary.com states “An epic hero is the main character of an epic poem that tells the story of a grand quest in which they use their extraordinary or superhuman abilities to achieve great things. In literature, a hero is simply the protagonist or main character. Some examples of epic heroes are Achilles, Perseus, and Hercules. Achilles is the epic hero of the Trojan War, he was known as the greatest of all the Greek warriors. Perseus was the greatest Greek hero and slayer of monsters. Perseus was the greatest Greek hero of slaying monsters until Hercules. Hercules was known for his incredible strength, courage, and intelligence. Hercules’ father was Zeus the king of the gods. Odysseus is an epic hero because he carries the traits of a hero like being brave, strong, and a great leader of men. He is known to be very motivational to his crew, motivating them to follow him through all kinds of situations without question. He cares for the men he lead, which makes him selfless. An epic hero fights for a noble cause as seen in many of the books Odyssues fights for his men and fights for people who cannot defend themselves such as women and children. An epic hero is a superhuman he is braver, smarter, cleverer than an ordinary person. For example Odysseus tricks the cyclops upon entering his cave; When they cyclops asked who's there he responded '' Nhbody'' Tricking the cyclops that his name was '' Nhbody'' Whilst while the cyclops being attacked he wasn't bale to be aided because the other cyclopes thought that nobody was attacking him. The epic hero often has a mix of divine and mortal blood and therefore possesses human weakness. The epic hero is charged with a quest for something with great value to him or his people. As seen in the books Odysseus is assigned a quest to undergo many brutal battles with many monsters to prove to the Gods that he is a true hero. The hero must reach a ''low point'' where he wants to give up or abandon his quest or appears defeated. In the Odyssey, Odysseus comes to a low point where he wants to give up and go home. But through his determination he was able to overcome his low point. I had to be creative by using things around my house like a paper plate, a Kroger bag, a random hiking stick, my halloween costume from when I thought I was going to do halloween, my moms mini coffee table, a mini exercise ball, and my acting audition set up. I also learned that being prepared helps a whole lot! I had a script for the news broadcast and most of the time I didn’t use it as much, but it did guide me through what I wanted to say and it kept me on topic. All of these things taught me a lesson and that lesson was creativity, productivity, and flexibility is key!
