This blockade occured as the soviet union wanted to prevent the other nations from being able to send supplies to the area and wanted to force discussions over the division of germany. This didn't work however as the other nations just airlifted supplies over the blockade. They separated into an eastern and a western sections, and tensions began to grow exponentially. This heavily lead to more conflict and tensions that sort of marked the start of the cold war. No real agreement happened over the further division of Germany.

Fidel castro came to power in an armed overthrow of cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. The united states government didn't like castro mainly due to distrust of his communist policies, and they also wanted to prevent communism from coming to the western hemisphere. The cia caught wind of the missiles that were being placed there, and eventually an invasion would occur called the bay of pigs invasion. The plan saw two air strikes and a rather unsuccessful ground invasion, partially due to issues with the weather and a lack of ammunition. Later many more airstrikes would occur. The invasion overall failed though and this had a large impact on the public opinion of the kennedy administration.

This is an image of Fidel Castro and fellow communists fighting for the Cuban revolution.

The Cuban revolution is when the cold war began to come to the western hemisphere. Cubans wanted to turn communist due to the current oppressive dictator. Castro (the leader of the communists) wanted to take over and lead the country into communism. The united states had a large stake as they owned much of the infrastructure, and also wanted to prevent the spread of communism at all costs, but they originally stated neutrality. The soviets also provided backing to castro and the communists, as the position would later be a vital area for the soviets to position nukes in hopes of scaring the united states/winning the arms race. Us relations were skewered with cuba in 1961, and then they officially invaded them shortly after.

The chinese communist revolution occurred shortly after wwII. After the chinese no longer had to worry about japan invading them due to wwII ending, there were immediately faced with a civil war/conflict between the communist party led by mao ze dang, and chiang kai-sek the (practically dictator) backed united states candidate for control. The communists originally were losing at early stages, but eventually learned from their mistakes and won more battles. In 1949 the communist party officially took over china. The west would block the communist party from having any official voting for quite some time, mainly due from efforts from the west that feared more and more people turning to communism.

Waves of protest had been occurring for quite some time, and eventually they all culminated into this climax. The goverment thought they could handle the protests with negotation, but eventually decided on sending the military. More and more people came to beijing, and smaller groups began to clash with the police. Eventually the chinese goverment sent the army to deal with the protests. While only a few thousand protestors were left by the time the army got there, the protestors began throwing stuff at the soldiers and fighting ensued. The soldiers beat to death and fired upon the protestors, eventually clearing the protests up.

In 1961, many east German workers began to construct a large concrete wall fit with barbed wire that aimed to separate the two separate sections of Germany. Over time it began to be a large symbol of the cold war. Many Germans died trying to flee, and still others tried to brave the wall or even tried to swim. Eventually they began to attack at the wall, and the guards, overwhelmed, asked officials if they should use force. Fearing a massacre, they eventually gave up on the wall and with help it was torn down in 1989.

Once again the united states followed its policy of containment and was attempting to prevent the spread of communism as much as possible. North korea and south korea had been mostly seperate, but when the north invdaded the south, the united states came to intervene. Fight would insue and eventually there would be a long stalemate at the 38th paralell. the Un continued to bomb the front lines but ground power was rather limited. This war saw some of the first air to air combat in history. No final peace treaty was ever really reached, instead a no fire and peace zone was created between the two.

They moved large amounts of nuclear missiles and weapons to Cuba, and the united states felt compelled to take action. Intel from the united states saw it at the beginning, but then weapons were installed to shoot down spy planes. Much of kennedy's policies were being shot down by congress, and public support for him was at an all time low. There were lots of different plants that hoped to slow the missiles and the setting up of them, and eventually they decided on a naval blockade. They prepared troops to invade cuba, and this was very contreversial throughout the world fearing nuclear war. Despite this though, united states citizens generally agreed with the blockade.

The west saw this as a huge victory over communism, as it showed that communism was a particularly viable solution. They fell due to many issues, the non russians conquered by the russians resisted assimilating into one russian state. Their economic plans failed heavily with tons of people starving. The policies of Glastnost and perestroika eventually would make the USSR less and less communist and closer to free market policies. The dissolution began on the edges of the Russia, those who had been captured and were not of Russian descent. Movements for independance sprang up all along the ex-ussr, and eventually it separated into all of these nations
