This poem is such a reminder to me that we don't know what is happening in every part of our students lives. There is so much beneath the surface, so much that they struggle with. That is doubled or tripled for those students learning a new language who are often in a brand-new country and environment. This poem is moving, but also makes me very sad.

They are defeated before they begin. It makes me want to change that outlook for them.

I realize that until I understand more about all of my students and where THEY come from, I can't expect them to learn everything I'm teaching. My responsibility changes to encompass the need to give students voice for their experiences, and somehow help them feel safe and secure enough in my classroom to put aside the experiences of the past and learn something new.

Sad that ML students experience such hard situations. This makes me want to help, support, teach, and love all students going through challenges. This is a good reminder to be patient with MLs and how frustrating and scared they would be starting a new school, moving to a new country, and learning a new language.

This poem make my heart break. To work with children that have/had this as their reality is horrific. To plan instruction for this student, I would go slow and ensure that their SEL needs were being met first. Then, when I felt that their basic were being met, then I would begin to get baselines and build from there. However, focusing on SEL is my number one priority.

Wow, so many thoughts. Realistically, if I came across this kind of expression from a student, I would give it to the school psychologist and ask their advice. Considering Maslow's hierarchy, I would keep an eye out for base needs as I evaluated where to begin with academics. Even in our somewhat posh district, in comparison, we have students with some heavy baggage that we can't be expected to treat so we need to do our best to be consistently employing empathy as we find ways to differentiate and diversify instruction.

This poem brings you back to reality of how your students really feel. As teachers we are focused on the things we can do to help them. And we tend to forget how they are feeling. They are going through a lot and it's 10 times harder on them. It's important to feel like they are growing and learning, even if the growth is tiny. They need to feel motivated and not like they are just failing.
