(36 Line 22)"

The way that Helmer describes the terrible things that Krogstad does is irony as he talks to his wife who is truly hiding behind a mask. As he tells her this, the reader gets the sense that Nora is in distraught because she doesn't want to be the cause of harm in what she believes is a happy marriage. But yet, her actions have begun what could be a snowball effect.

EAL

As the story progresses the audience begins to realize that Nora isn't actually stupid as she makes herself seem to Torvald. We see this take place when in the beginning of the story Nora acts as if she is just a little girl to Torvald, this is shown very prominently when he calls her by nicknames. "Helmer: Is that my little squirrel bustling about? --> Nora: Yes!"(Ibsen,12) Later on we begin to see that Nora actually know a lot more than expected of a woman and has many secrets of her own that could hurt the relationship. Such as when we discover that Nora had taken out a loan to save her husbands life. This is stated directly later on when Nora is talking to Krogstad a 2nd time."Nora: You don't mean that you will tell my husband that I owe you money?"(Ibsen,31)
S.M.

"Mrs. Linde: Listen to me, Nora dear. Haven't you been a little bit imprudent?
Nora: Is it imprudent to save your husband's life?" (p21).
Nora accomplishes a good deed in her mind, saving her husband, by employing potentially harmful or unethical means. She, as a child, focuses on an outcome and disregards the effects of the actions to achieve that outcome. Nora does not care that she may have offended Torvald through her actions, because in her mind the important thing her actions have done is save him, and that is good. The good at the end justifies the faults. This creates a theme that sometimes instantaneous satisfaction is worth the long term regret or problems associated with it.
A.W.

As the reader is introduced to each of the characters, Helmer calls Nora "my little lark" giving the image of a bird, flitting here and there, always busy (pg 12). This image is reinforced as Nora's character is seen to be temperamental and ever-changing along with her mood. During her conversation with Krogstad, Nora uses her husbands position to claim a certain degree of influence as she tries to establish her superiority. However, when Krogstad claims that she should be able to use her "influence" to help him, she protests, saying "But, Mr. Krogstad, I have no influence" (pg 30). This is not the only time we see Nora contradict herself or change the story, proving to be a pattern that could eventually end up having serious consequences. A.S.

The theme of identity is presented through the character Nora and how she finds her true identity through the play.
At the start she is called by Torvald pet names which reveal more about how he sees her than who she really is. She goes along with this "we larks and squirrels", suggesting that she does not know herself but is a reflection of what Torvald sees. Neither Torvald, nor Nora, actually know who the real Nora is. In Act 3 however Nora realises her true identity when she says to Torvald "You've never understood me - I have been greatly wronged."
Mrs Linde's role is a dramatic device as it is she who leads Nora to her self-discovery and to honesty. Mrs Linde tells Nora "it's impossible to carry on with all these concealments and excuses." which turns out to be right. Mrs Linde sees Nora for who she really is.
Nora has to leave Torvald and her children as she realises that she is "first and foremost a human being" and that she has to find her true identity as one - "I have to think these things through for myself and see to it I get an understanding of them." She can only discover herself through leaving Torvald and her family, however painful that may be.
Ibsen seems to be suggesting that to find your identity you need to be honest and true to yourself.

EAL (Rory the Lion)
