This is the band that got vocalist, Gerard Way, into a more ‘theatrical’ approach to music, which is more evident in their subsequent albums, ‘Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge’, and ‘The Black Parade’. “It gave me that theatre influence” (Reprise, 2006).

The vocalist, Morrisey, is particularly influential to MCR, through their use of storytelling through lyrics. “His storytelling, his lyrics, how bleak it was in contrast to how pop it was” (Reprise, 2006) This is evident through the fact that all of My Chemical Romance’s albums have an underlying story behind them.

‘the band that got me obsessed with the concept of revenge’. ‘Growing up, I didn’t want to be Van Halen, I wanted to be Greg Ginn’ (Reprise, 2006). The combination of the lyrical concept of revenge and the musical simplicity of their style of punk is characteristic of My Chemical Romance, of their ‘fast, aggressive’ approach to punk and emo.

Lyricism is more personal and more relatable, which is extremely influential to my development as a songwriter and storyteller. Lyrics are less structured and more 'stream of consciousness'.
Stylistically, showed me a softer and more subtle side of emo, which I matured into, eschewing from a more aggressive sound.

The Front Bottoms

A folk punk band that Modern Baseball was presumably inspired by during the recording of their first album. When listening to The Front Bottoms’ eponymous debut album from 2011, it is evident that Modern Baseball was heavily influenced by The Front Bottoms during the recording of their debut album, Sports, from 2012. This is most evident from The Front Bottoms’ vocalist Brian Sella’s vocal inflection being similar to Modern Baseball vocalist Brendan Lukens, through their over-pronunciation of their vocals, and both releases’ minimalism when it comes to instrumentation (see ‘@chloek’ by Modern Baseball, and ‘Flashlight’ by The Front Bottoms).

Aided to the maturity of their lyrics, where their style was more stylistic for teenage/adolescent lyrics. The Weakerthans showed Ewald that their lyrics could be more mature and suited to an older audience. “This can be translated to getting older, this is a kind of music that can grow with me. There is a way to write music with a lot of words, that I don’t need to pigeonhole to when I was 18” (XPN, 2019)

Say Anything
