It was helpful to read through the 8 steps of addressing microaggressions. The first two steps, "take a deep breath," and "acknowledge," are often overlooked when a microaggression occurs. Reading this article helped me to reflect on taking a deep breath and reflecting on the other person's reality and perspective before responding.

Culturally Responsive Math Strategies highlighted some ways to make math accessible to all students by relating it to authentic, relevant examples from all students' daily lives. Although some of the suggestions - like using frioles for counters to "celebrate Mexican heritage" - almost seemed like a token acknowledgement to me and not a meaningful addition to the activity.

The goal will be to bridge the gap between the real world and the math instruction. We should frame our lessons with life experiences and bring in the community into our learning and teaching. Strategies are as follows:

Challenging and complex work

Embed relevant literature in lessons

Present lessons in native language

Activities including strong oral component

Role play scenarios that are relevant

Use picture references that tie in prior experiences
