Dark romanticism is a subgenre of romanticism that focuses on the dark side of human emotions and on the decent into darkness. Some of the things this genre of romancticism focuses on is human fallibility, self destruction, judgement, punishment, as well as the psychological effects of guilt and sin.


What are its characteristics?

Dark romanticism is a genre that focuses on the irrationality of a character. The genre is characterized by focusing on themes such as misjudgment of human character, self-destructive behavior, retribution, sinning, and the guilt associated with these actions or traits. Dark romanticism novels focus on how the immoral aspects of a character influence the overall plot and the other characters in the story.


Why is Hawthorne considered a dark romanticist?

Hawthorne is considered a dark romanticist because many of his novels, including The Scarlet Letter, reflect themes of Dark Romanticism as they depict a fascination with the suffering humans endure in life and how the human side displays morals that are shut away by seemingly upstanding individuals with dark, unwanted secrets. Since this is a common theme seen in Hawthorne's stories, he is identified as a Dark Romanticist author.
