The Springfield race riot of 1908 were events of mass racial violence committed against African Americans by a mob of about 5,000 white Americans and European immigrants in Springfield, Illinois. 2 African Americans were arrested as suspects of rape. The alleged victims were two young white women and the father of one of them. A white mob went out to lynch them but the sheriff had transferred them out of the city. The whites went out and attacked Black neighborhoods, destroyed black business, and murdered blacks in the street. This was a very large act of oppression at least 16 people had died and 150,00 dollars was lost in property damage.

The NAACP was established in February 1909 in New York City by an interracial group of activists, partially in response to the 1908 Springfield race riot in Illinois. Which is meant to secure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights in order to eliminate race-based discrimination and ensure the health and well-being of all persons. This is a big action of resistance because it helps stop race based discrimination.

The protests started when 46-year-old George Floyd died after being handcuffed and pinned to the ground by police officer Derek Chauvin. Chauvin was filmed kneeling on Floyd’s neck for more than eight minutes. Floyd had been accused of using a counterfeit $20 bill at a local deli in Minneapolis. All four officers involved in the incident were fired and Chauvin was charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. This is an act of oppression because it shows how African Americans are still vulnerable racism and police, but the protests that came after even during a pandemic show resistance even during tough times.
