The author makes a great point that teachers have a great opportunity to observes people within their profession. This relates to me because I use experiences and lessons learned from previous teachers to shape how I run my class and teach my students.

The author talks about how some educators view school from a holistic perspective. I agree because as a special education teacher, we are focusing on academics as well as their transition to adult life. This allows us to give them their academic skills needed as well as tools to make them employable, prepare them for college, or assist them in living on their own.

The author made a valid point that when the teacher ties their sense of self to their belief, they are resistant to change. This is a common factor amongst more veteran teachers. They tend to do something a certain wait for so long that it becomes who they are in the classroom. This can make it hard when a new model, strategy, or technique is introduced and needed in the classroom to meet the needs of ALL learners.

The author discussed how being aware of your beliefs might not be enough to bring change. This is where a professional needs to take time and reflect on who they are and what they are doing. If we want to be the best for our students we need to be able to make a change, even if it makes us uncomfortable.

One of if not the most impactful statement from this article was that the educators believe has a huge impact on the classroom. This is the primary example of why we should be unbiased and focus on our students and the content rather than what makes us feel better. Us talking about our personal beliefs or how we see things in society does not do anything to the students other than confuse them or make them uncomfortable. We are not there to make students believe what we believe rather we are there to make them lifelong learners.

One of the mini struggles that educators have is that there is no time for professional development. The author also talks about how the biggest problem for administrators and educators is the ability to allow us to have productive reflection. I understand that this is a problem across the field of educators, but if we are also holding our self accountable, we will make time.

The last key Takeaway that I reflected with in this article was that our beliefs guide our decision-making, behavior, and interaction in the classroom. If you teach her to school, where the students are generally brought up the same way you were brought up the beliefs might align because that is similar to their home life. However, if you are out of school, where the demographic is generally not the same as you or the socioeconomic status is not the same as you there is going to be a ton of disagreement and beliefs and values. This is a prime example of why our beliefs should not guide our instruction or lead our classroom.
